After I said that last sentence, Sam was visibly stunned.
His expression twisted with confusion, and the hatred in his eyes was replaced with doubt and bewilderment.
"What do you mean? You know who my parents are?" Sam asked urgently.
"I don't, but Mr. Sommerton should know," I replied.
Gerald's fingers trembled as he looked up, unwilling to look Sam in the eye.
Chad, standing to the side, watched the scene with great interest and couldn't resist adding, "Dad, you should tell him."
"Shut up," Gerald said through gritted teeth. He then tucked the blanket around Sam, patiently coaxing him, "I'll talk to you once you're better."
"Do you really know where my parents are?" Sam gripped Gerald's sleeve tightly. "Then why haven't they come to find me?"
Sam's cold expression relaxed slightly, and from that, I could tell he was anguished. The more anxious Sam was, the more unpleasant Gerald's expression became.
Gerald turned his head away, not daring to meet Sam's gaze. "Once I'm done with this busy period, I'll tell you their reasons."
"What reasons could they have that made them abandon their own child?"
Sam's anger was evident. Even after so many years had passed, he would still lose control of his emotions whenever this topic was brought up.
Gerald felt his heart aching. He turned to me and said, "Mr. Joplin, let's talk somewhere else."
Gerald could already imagine how Sam would react to the truth—he would definitely go crazy.
"Okay," I agreed.
This was the perfect opportunity for me to gain leverage over Gerald. After all, he probably didn't want to lose his son.
