I couldn't help but show a stern expression, but Xavier didn't seem to care.
He looked smug as he tilted his head up to look at me with anticipation. "Mommy never taught me these things. It's just that I need to build a good relationship with directors if I want to make progress."
"So, you drank today to please Mr. Canes?" I asked.
Just the thought of them making such a young child drink made me want to send all of them to prison.
"Don't they know that this is illegal?" I tried to warn Xavier not to fall into their traps.
Yet Xavier seemed unfazed. "I was just trying to help Mommy. That man wanted her to drink. Mommy is a woman. What if she drank too much?"
He had been worried that Jared wouldn't take care of Yvonne. As a child, he wouldn't have been able to bring her back home. It was better for him to drink.
His expression grew somber at the thought of Yvonne. He wondered what was going on with Yvonne and Jared. He hesitated as he looked at Murphy before he asked tentatively, "Could you lend me your phone? I want to give Mommy a call."
The moment I heard this, I signaled for Murphy to put his phone away.
"No. Let them deal with this mess today on their own. They should've thought of the consequences of trying so hard to cozy up to Mr. Canes," I said.
I looked at him coldly, and Xavier immediately turned his head away to ignore me. It was fine if he ignored me. I didn't care what he thought at all.
I took Xavier straight home, and Lorraine was there when we got back.
She looked at Xavier, who was in my arms, and carefully touched his forehead. "Why is his face so red?"
