I looked at the ID she handed me, which seemed to match what Murphy had found out.
She had just started her freshman year at university, but she was so thin that I thought she was malnourished. Or was she just on a diet?
I looked at Yolanda, a stranger I had no reason to dislike, and couldn't help but ask with some concern, "Have you eaten?"
"So, you believe me?" Yolanda was clearly surprised that I believed her so quickly. She was a bit excited as she leaned forward with both her hands on the desk.
Her actions were a bit too intimate for my liking, and I leaned back on reflex. "Stand up straight."
Yolanda stuck out her tongue at my reprimanding tone. Then, she clasped her arms behind her back and stood in front of me.
She seemed to have grown up quite well. At least, she didn't seem to think that I was the man who stopped her from seeing her father.
"It's obvious from just one look whose daughter you are," I said in a heavy tone.
My serious tone probably shocked Yolanda. She shrunk back and apologized, "I'm sorry."
I was a bit surprised. I didn't expect Ruth to be capable of raising such a polite daughter. "Why are you apologizing?"
"Because my mom ruined your family," she said.
She didn't understand things when she was younger, but it was all clear to her now. She had no way of stopping what happened in the past, nor did she have any way of making up for it. All she could do was apologize to me.
I looked at her for a long time.
It seemed like Henry and Ruth's daughter was quite sensible, but the fact that she came here alone probably meant that she didn't come here just to tell me she was my sister.
"Why did you come to see me?" I asked.
There was no way Ruth would have agreed to let her come here, so she had probably snuck out. Judging by how she looked, she probably hadn't eaten yet.
I called Murphy, "Book a restaurant."
"I'll leave. The two of you should have a proper chat with each other," Lorraine said as she got up to leave, which left just the two of us in the office.
