The Heart Left Behind (Cole and Yvonne) novel Chapter 64

I found it absurd when I heard what the staff at the courthouse said. We weren't talking about a criminal here. What did they mean by providing as much evidence as I could possibly find?

"Hurry up and go, then. Don't let me keep you." Lorraine didn't even let me walk her to her car. She simply turned and left.

Once I was done settling Jonas, I headed straight to the courthouse. Johnny House, my lawyer, was already there, waiting for me by the door. The concern in his eyes was unmistakable.

"What took you so long?"

I heard what he said and sensed that something went wrong. Things had probably taken a turn and become more serious than I had imagined.

"What's the matter?"

"Yvonne countersued you, saying that you did everything in your power to threaten her into giving up Xavier. It's making things difficult for us too."

"What does this mean?" I was in no mood to play a guessing game. "Just give it to me straight."

Johnny wanted to spit it out, but he couldn't bring himself to say it. It looked like he was stuck in an impossible situation.

"I left you in charge of this matter because I had faith in you, Johnny." I crossed my fingers and rested my elbows on the table. Then, I leaned over and stared at him.

"You're not going to let me down."

I would have Xavier's custody.

"I'll do everything I can." Johnny wiped the sweat on his forehead. He knew my tricks better than anyone. If he screwed this up, he would have no place to go.

"With that said, I need evidence right now. I have to prove that Yvonne doesn't have what it takes to continue raising Xavier." Johnny was playing by the rules. There was no forcing this.

"Do you have anything I can use as evidence? For example, does she have a history of mental illness or domestic abuse?" Johnny thought about letting Xavier choose, but I shot down the idea immediately.

I knew that Xavier would never choose me. That left Johnny with the last option.

"A history of mental illness?"

Yvonne had a sound mind. She could even debate with me.

"How about you find a friend and forge a report?"

Johnny rubbed his palms together. He was eager to give it a shot. "I do know a guy."
