The price of betrayal (Jack and Ashley) novel Chapter 294

One question was all it took for Nolan to silence the crowd. He had made a fair point. Who were they to say the Spirit of Life Serum was fake when not one of them had actually seen the real thing? Everyone present, including the Baxters, was just repeating rumors.

But despite this, not one person looked remorseful. To them, there was no way Nolan could have obtained such a valuable item when they themselves couldn't.

Megan sneered at Nolan. "I figured you'd say that, Nolan. You're banking on the fact that none of us have seen the real serum, so you showed up with a fake as a gift, hoping it'll at least get you through this situation, right?

"Because we would have no way to refute you. Isn't that what you're thinking?"

Megan thought she had been smart enough to see through Nolan's tricks and mocked him. "But you've overlooked a very important fact. None of us here have been able to acquire this treasure, so what makes you think you—a nobody fresh out of prison—could?

"You're an idiot for making such a rookie mistake."

Nolan had come prepared for this situation. Seemingly unfazed by their ridicule, he shook his head gently and sighed.

"It doesn't matter if it's real or fake. It's not meant for any of you anyway. And none of you are in any position to judge. My advice? Show a little restraint, lest you end up embarrassing yourselves."

There was little anyone could say to that, especially since none of them had seen the real Spirit of Life Serum and they couldn't prove that Nolan was lying.

Suddenly, Ironhead laughed. "I've been wanting to kill you Nolan, but now I think you're actually quite amusing.

"How could one person manage to offend so many people? This whole room hates you and blames you for everything. Why do you think that is?"
