With a single sentence, the affection in Kara's voice was so saccharine that it almost made Leonard feel weak at the knees.
Meanwhile, George, who had remained largely unnoticed until now, seemed to come alive, his eyes regaining a glimmer of vitality.
If anyone was suffering the most at this moment, it was undoubtedly George.
Let's not forget—George had specifically gone out of his way to meet Nolan at the hotel entrance. But instead of welcoming him, he had insulted and warned Nolan, outright offending him without leaving any room for him to retreat.
At the time, George didn't feel like he was in the wrong. Given the circumstances, it seemed certain that Nolan wouldn't survive. His actions had made sense, or so he thought.
Who could have predicted things would take such a drastic turn?
“Audrey, Kara,” George said bitterly. "I may need you both to protect me. Otherwise, I doubt Nolan will let me off the hook today."
His tone carried the weight of self-reproach, silently cursing himself for having gone too far before.
Audrey and Kara exchanged a glance, both momentarily stunned before looking back at George. "Dad, you didn't even offend Nolan. What are you so afraid of?"
George felt utterly helpless. He said with a bitter smile, "Who says I didn't offend him? I offended him to the point of no return. I just went on to pick a fight with him.
"But I did it for your sake, Audrey. After all, you were with Shaun. If Nolan had kept pestering you, it wouldn't do you any good. That's why I acted the way I did. But who could've expected things to turn out like this?
"Audrey, it's too late to say anything now. Nolan's on the rise again, and I fear he won't let me off this time."
