The price of betrayal (Jack and Ashley) novel Chapter 459

Wayne felt deeply moved in that moment. His child had grown up—that was exactly what he had hoped for. He had not been of much help to Nolan in the past, so what right did he have to criticize him now for anything?

"Dad, you don't need to overthink things," Nolan said, as if sensing what Wayne was thinking. "I'm all grown up now, and I promise to take good care of you in the future. But before that, I'm afraid you'll have to endure some pain. However, this brief hardship will lead to long-lasting happiness, so I hope you won't blame me for it."

Wayne, walking alongside Nolan through the long crowd, felt the weight of thousands of eyes on them. At that moment, he was consumed by nervousness. At the same time, there was an undercurrent of anger building inside of him, because he could feel the emotions within those gazes.

There was envy, jealousy, and even hatred. It was as though everyone harbored ill intentions toward Nolan. The pressure was overwhelming for Wayne, and he couldn't help but wonder how much more intense it must be for Nolan.

"Nolan, do what you have to do. I'm old and can't help you much anymore. The only thing I can do is not to cause you any additional trouble." After a brief pause, Wayne continued, "But some things, if they can be salvaged, should be salvaged."

Nolan nodded without saying much more.

As they reached the front of the stage, Nolan glanced at Niall, who was excitedly standing nearby. "Niall, if you don't mind, come up with me, because I might need you to protect me later."

Niall's eyes widened immediately. He quickly followed after Nolan and said in a low voice, "Don't worry, Nolan. No one can hurt you as long as I'm here. Just do whatever you want to do, and I'll back you up!"

Nolan smiled lightly without saying much. Wayne, on the other hand, fell into a deep silence. If even Niall could trust Nolan unconditionally, why couldn't he, as a father? It should have been him giving Nolan support and protection, yet here he was, unable to do so.
