Lyra left Nile’s side and went to stand beside Julian, which caused another stir among the guests.
“Lyra, what are you doing?” Nile asked, pretending to be hurt and confused. “Who is he? What’s the meaning of this?”
“It’s over, Nile,” Lyra said, calling him by his real name. “The real Lycan King is here.” Looking around, she addressed the guests. “That is the Rogue King who has been trying to take over the kingdom. He imprisoned His Majesty and forced me to work for him.”
“How absurd!” Nile yelled. “Lyra, how could you do this to me? I trusted you despite what everyone said about you, and this is how you repay me? Have you been working for the rogues all this time?”
“He could be right,” someone said. “Nobody knows anything about her background. Maybe she is a spy sent by the rogues.”
“I knew something did not make sense about her,” the Alpha of the Luminous Pack, Lucian, yelled, stepping forward. “Why would the king choose a nobody over my daughter? She must have bewitched him!”
“This is the real king,” Lyra said, “I can prove it with our mate bond.”
“We are not fools,” one of the Lunas said. “The mate bond will prove nothing. Maybe all this time, your real mate has been the Rogue King. He sent you here to bewitch and confuse His Majesty!”
“It all makes sense now,” someone added. “When she went to the Red Moon Pack, she spared the rogues. Why would she spare our enemies? They killed hundreds of werewolves and destroyed the pack. And yet, she formed a new pack with them and forced the members of the Red Moon Pack to live with the very rogues who terrorised them.”
“The rogues surrendered and wished to leave the Rogue King,” Lyra explained. “That’s why I accepted them into the new pack.”
“Is that so?” someone challenged. “I heard that you killed Alpha Devon with your own hands. What can you say about that?”
“Alpha Devon was under a spell and had gone wild, killing his own pack members,” Lyra replied. “Killing him was the only way to stop him.”
“What an excuse! You must have bewitched him yourself. Is that why you volunteered to go to the pack? It must have been your plan all along.”
“Don’t forget,” another added, pointing at Zero and Beryl, “these two accompanied her to the Red Moon Pack. They must have been working with her all this time.”
“I’ll take the female,” Lucian said, pointing at Lyra, “and the one claiming to be the Lycan King. After that, we can carry out investigations to find out the truth.”
“Lyra is going nowhere,” Julian said, reaching for her arm and pulling her to his side. “Touch her and you’ll die.”
“Look around you,” Lucian said. “You cannot defeat all of us. Surrender or die.”
“You are so sure that he is telling the truth and we are lying,” Julian said. “Are you in cohorts with him?”
“What?” Lucian bellowed. “Are you accusing me of treason?”
“I’ve always been loyal to the royal family, and I would never plot with our kingdom’s enemies,” Alpha Lucian swore. “You are the one trying to confuse everyone here with the help of that female beside you.”
