After finding out that the Queen Mother’s birthday was only one week away on the next Saturday, Lyra used every minute of free time she could scrape up to think of a suitable performance.
It was a short time frame, but she was determined to formulate something. She did not want to let the opportunity go to waste, and even if she was not successful, she would know that she at least tried.
Fortunately, she did not have to come up with something alone. Zero always joined her whenever she had the time to go exploring in the forest around the palace. The kind of performances presented to the Queen Mother ranged from combat skills to magic tricks and everything in between. So, even if Lyra was an Omega, she had a chance. All she had to do was find something that could amuse the Queen Mother.
During the day, she worked as diligently as she could. She turned a deaf ear to the other maids’ insults and took care to not get into any trouble. The last thing she wanted was to get thrown into the dungeon just before the Queen Mother’s birthday ceremony!
To her surprise, Thea did not try to make her life as hard as she had during the first few days. She was still strict and never smiled at her, but she did not give Lyra any punishing chores or undeserved punishments.
At first, Thea had viewed her as one of the Omegas whose main purpose once they set foot in the palace was to seduce the king and other high-ranking males. Those types often slacked in their jobs and usually did not last long. But as Lyra worked harder and more earnestly, Thea’s guard against her lowered.
Sure, she might be after the king and his cousin and Goddess knows who else, and Thea despised that. But as the head servant, she appreciated a maid who did her job well and never caused any trouble since it made her own job easier.
It was during her daily forays into the forest that Lyra discovered a surprising talent–she could communicate with animals! Some werewolves, often the high ranked ones, had some special talents or skills, but she had never known anyone who could communicate with different animals.
Right away, she knew her talent was the only thing she could use to prepare a performance that could stand out from the rest. Knowing she would not get an opportunity to present her gift as an Omega and a slave, she entrusted Zero with the presentation.
Soon, it was the day of the ceremony. The banquet hall was full of important guests, mostly Alphas and Lunas from all around the kingdom. Lyra was working as a server, which allowed her to be in the hall most of the time.
When it came to the gift presentation, Zero showed up and revealed that he had a surprise for the Queen Mother. He carried in a fish tank with lots of goldfish inside. At first, people thought he was gifting her the fish and wondered what was so special about them. But then, with Lyra’s influence, the goldfish started swimming around. Soon, they arranged themselves into a formation that read ‘Happy Birthday Your Royal Highness’. The guests were shocked and started clapping.
The Queen Mother was impressed too and asked Zero to do it again. This time, everyone watched with total interest as the fish formed the words. After it was done, Lyra made the fish do a few impressive acrobatic jumps before spelling out the words again.
The hall flooded with praises for Zero, and Lyra’s heart beat fast as she awaited the Queen Mother’s verdict. She looked impressed enough, with a huge smile and a look of awe on her face…so maybe it had worked?
“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Isla said to Zero. “When did you learn that?”
“Actually, I did not do anything,” Zero confessed. He looked towards where Lyra was standing near the wall. “Lyra is the one guiding the fish. She is one of the servants.”
“Oh,” Isla said, and for a moment, Lyra’s heart almost dropped to her feet. Would the Queen Mother be put off by the fact that she was the one who had performed the trick?
