When Lyra left the banquet hall after the ceremony, Crystal waylaid her. Like Julian, Crystal had not bothered her after that first day, and Lyra had been hoping that it would keep on like that. But as it looked, her luck had run out.
“What do you think you are doing?” Crystal asked, crossing her arms over her chest and watching Lyra with suspicious eyes.
“What do you mean?” Lyra asked, truly confused. What had she done?
Crystal scoffed and stepped close enough to her that all Lyra could smell was her perfume. “An Omega at the royal raining camp?” She huffed. “Is that what you wanted all along? Do you think it’ll keep you close to Julian?”
No, what I wanted was to get the hell out of here so I never have to see your stupid face again.
“If you have a problem with that,” Lyra told her flatly, “you can take it up with the Queen Mother.”
Crystal snickered. She had been happy when she heard Lyra’s request to Isla, only for Julian to ruin everything. She couldn’t get it, why did he care whether a lowly slave stayed at the palace or not? He should have just let her go!
“You better not cross my path,” Crystal warned her. “We might be in the same palace, but if you offend me ever again, I’ll make your life a living hell.”
Is that supposed to scare me? My life has been nothing but a living hell to this point.
Lyra said nothing to her, and Crystal turned and walked away. As soon as Crystal was out of her sight, she was also out of Lyra’s mind. Lyra was simply too excited about the opportunity to attend the training camp to dwell on Crystal’s threats.
The best thing was that she did not have to wait until after the program to experience any changes. Since she would be attending training at the Royal Academy, she would no longer be working as a maid. Therefore, she was moving out of the dormitory to a different building with a proper room.
The next morning as she left to head over to the Academy, she ran into Julian. Seeing him, a sense of foreboding filled her. What if he was there to tell her that she was no longer allowed to attend training?
She would have preferred to walk right past him without acknowledging him, but he was still the Lycan King and she was still just a slave. Best to not give him a reason to get his mother to withdraw her gift.
“Your Majesty,” she said, eyeing the ground.
She could feel his glare burning into her head. “Don’t think that this changes anything,” he said coldly. “Just because I kept you here does not mean that I’ll acknowledge you as my mate. You had better not say anything.”
Lyra felt like laughing. She better not say anything? Even if she said anything, who would believe her? They would think she was crazy and desperate for the king’s attention. Yeah, she was totally going to give everyone another reason to treat her like an outcast.
“You are the one who forced me to stay here,” she said, unable to hold back the bite in her voice. It was impossible when everything that came out of his mouth made her want to scream. She raised her eyes to him. “I could be out of your hair by now, but you stopped me. What makes you think I want anyone to know the truth? You are the one who should think about what you want.”
“I want to have never met you, but that ship has already sailed, hasn’t it?” Julian snapped. If it was not for that stupid curse, he would not have stopped his mother from granting Lyra’s wish. Hell, he would not have waited for someone else to get rid of her. In fact, he never would have brought her to the palace to begin with.
“I did not ask you to bring me with you,” Lyra retorted. “If you don’t want to see me or be associated with me, reject me. What are you waiting for?”
It was a puzzle she had tried to unravel many times but which seemed to be getting more and more twisted. The only reason Devon had not gotten rid of her was because of the king’s law. But the king himself was not answerable to anyone, so he could do as he pleased. And, since no one knew that she was his mate, he could reject her and move on like nothing happened. She could not understand why he insisted on keeping her around but also kept on antagonising her.
“I would suggest you watch how you talk to me,” he warned darkly.
His voice caused a shiver down her spine, but it did not shake her. It only made her want to challenge him more. “Or what?”
He wasn’t going to reject her, throw her out of the palace, or kill her. So what the hell did he mean with all these threats?
Julian ground his teeth together and fought hard to control his impulse. It was daylight, and they were outside. Anyone could be watching. Anyone could walk by. So he couldn’t show her exactly what.
He had a sudden urge to throw her over his lap and spank the living daylights out of her butt. He would tie her up and tease her to no end, taking whatever he wanted and giving her nothing. She would beg for what he could give her. Please, Your Majesty.
Her eyes were full of challenge, daring him. She had no idea what she was playing with. And he had no idea why the hell he was letting her get to him. It would be better if he ignored her existence. He was not going to let some Omega keep messing with his head.
“Or you’ll wish someone taught you how to talk to your fucking king,” he growled through his teeth. With one last menacing glare, he went on his way.
Lyra released a shaky breath and continued towards the school. She was never going to figure out what Julian’s deal was, so she pushed him to the back of her mind. She couldn’t let anyone ruin today for her.
She had always wanted to go to school, but Devon had denied her that right. He had forbidden her from undertaking any part of training, as if deliberately keeping her as pathetic as possible. But now, she was attending the Royal Training Camp, at the Royal Academy. It felt like a dream. It was a dream for Omegas.
The school was within the palace grounds but tucked away far from the palace, providing a conducive environment for studying and combat training. Lyra arrived earlier than stipulated on purpose, wanting to avoid attention as much as possible.
When she got to the classroom, she selected a seat at the back, hoping to be as inconspicuous as possible. If she was lucky enough, they would not even notice that she was there.
