“Miss! Miss!”
Crystal woke up to the sound of her frantic maidservant calling her name. She groaned as she opened her eyes, not appreciating the rude awakening.
“What's all this racket in the morning?” she demanded, glaring at the female standing beside her bed.
“We have been ambushed!” the maid cried, wringing her hands in front of her body.
“What?” Crystal frowned and climbed from her bed. “What are you talking about?”
“I don't know what's going on,” the maid said. “They rushed in and detained our guards, everybody is panicking!”
Crystal rushed to the window and looked outside. In front of the mansion, she saw a line of Blacksword guards kneeling on the ground. Surrounding them was a group of guards in golden armour.
Royal guards! What on earth were they doing at her pack?
Crystal rushed to get dressed and hurried downstairs. When she got to the ground floor, she spied a group of royal guards escorting her father out of the house.
“Father!” she called, running towards them as they led him out of the house. When she got to them, the guards surrounded him, preventing her from getting to him. “What is going on?”
“It’s okay princess,” her father assured her. “Everything will be fine.”
“Why are they taking you away?”
“It's just a misunderstanding,” Alpha Black said. “Look after the pack while I'm gone. I'll be back soon.”
“But–”
The guards grabbed Alpha Black's arms and led him away. Crystal rushed after them, but more guards stood in her way and warned her to not get in the way or she would be arrested too.
Soon enough, Crystal found out that her father was in deep trouble. Apparently, the Lycan King had made an announcement that morning revealing the result of a months-long investigation. He had found proof that Alpha Black had been the leader of a group of packs that had been colluding to overthrow the government.
The evidence had been distributed to all Alphas and Councils throughout the kingdom, with the king announcing that the culprits would be dealt with right away according to werewolf law.
“No,” Crystal whispered. It couldn't be true. It was all a set-up!
When she heard that the pack’s Elders Council was holding an emergency meeting to address the issue, she went to them. When she came into the room, they all fell silent, gloomy looks on all of their faces.
Crystal went to the head of the table, where her father would be sitting if he was present. “This is a scheme against our pack,” she proclaimed. “The king is afraid of the growing sentiment against the royal pack and he now wants to use us as scapegoats to cover up for himself. We cannot just stand by and let him do whatever he wants!”
“Miss Black, there's a lot of incriminating evidence against your father,” the head of the council said.
