The revelation of Alpha Black's schemes sent the kingdom reeling. The packs that had lifted their voices against the royal pack retreated, claiming they had no idea that Alpha Black had ulterior motives.
The royal pack’s reputation was restored, and the rumours regarding Julian's mismanagement and unfairness died. By uncovering Alpha Black's schemes with clear evidence, he had shown that he was capable of keeping the kingdom safe.
Now, instead of slamming him for not marrying Crystal Black, everybody was saying he was lucky he hadn't. One of the new rumours going around was that Crystal had been sent by her father to assassinate the Lycan King.
“They must have thought the king was stupid,” Lyra overheard one of the servants gossiping while two of them worked in the garden. Lyra was hidden behind a few of bushes, so they were unaware of her presence. “It turns out he had been steps ahead of them.”
“I was so glad when she left the palace,” another one said. “She was already overbearing, I can't imagine how she would have acted once she became queen. I once heard from someone that she intended to fire all of us and replace us with her personal servants from Blacksword once she was crowned queen.”
“I always knew Blacksword was eyeing the throne all along, even though they pretended to be on the side of the royal pack,” the first servant said. “But, do you think the king will really marry Lyra?”
“She is just an Omega,” the second servant replied. “Have you ever heard of an Omega Luna Queen?”
“She might be an Omega, but the things she is capable of…I mean, she is a member of the King's Guard,” the first one pointed out. “Only the strongest and properly trained warriors can become the king's bodyguard.”
“It doesn't matter,” her friend said. “An Omega is an Omega, period. Besides, who knows how she became a member of the guards? She must have been given the opportunity to attend the royal academy only because she was the king's lover. After that, do you think the trainers would have failed someone who was close to the king? Does it make sense to you that an Omega can be better than Alphas in the exercises involved during training at the Academy?”
The first servant appeared to be unsure. “Well…the traitorous high ranking officials of the rebelling packs were reduced to Omegas, so who knows? Her status can be elevated too. Personally, I think it's better for us if one of us becomes the queen.”
The other one scoffed. “You are naive if you think she'll remain humble if she becomes queen. People change once they get a taste of power and status.”
Lyra was about to leave when a third servant joined the duo, her voice full of excitement as she relayed a new piece of gossip.
“Have you guys heard? His Majesty is holding the upcoming press conference to announce the new queen candidate,” she informed the others.
Lyra was aware that the king was having a press briefing that afternoon, in fact that was where she was headed after this. She had assumed it would be regarding the recent happenings in the kingdom, giving everyone an update on the security situation.
Lyra knew better than to believe the gossip spread among the palace servants, but…it wasn't so far-fetched. There was a lot of speculation about who the king would name as the next queen, with many believing despite the rumours about his lover, he would choose a powerful Alpha female.
“I wonder who it will be,” the second servant said. “I cannot think of anyone more befitting than Gloria of the Luminous Pack . She was always a better choice than Crystal.”
“What are you talking about?” the first servant asked. “Have you forgotten about Lyra? The king threw out Crystal so he could be with her!”
“You know nothing,” servant number two claimed. “The king was only using Crystal to investigate her father. He never intended to marry her, so him throwing her out had nothing to do with his lover. Also, if you really think he'd make Lyra queen, you are truly dumb. The best she can be is his mistress.”
“But I heard that he told the elders he would make her queen,” the third servant said.
“I'm telling you,” servant number two insisted, “there's no way she can become the Luna Queen. It has never happened, and it never will.”
Looking at her watch, Lyra realised it was time to report to her post for the press conference. She walked away, blotting out the words of the servants. It was not worth it to trouble her mind with groundless gossip. She had decided to trust Julian, and he had promised she would be the queen. That was all that she needed to know. If it turned out to be a lie, well. She would deal with it when the time came.
Half an hour later, the press conference started. The room was packed with journalists, and the air was full of excitement. Lyra knew the excitement had nothing to do with the security of the kingdom. They were all more concerned about the king's queen pick, and she could bet they had all prepared many questions in that regard.
When Julian began his address, he said that he was there to give updates on the security of the kingdom and make an important announcement. It was obvious from the beginning that everybody was waiting for the big announcement.
“That's all for the state of security in the kingdom,” Julian said, pushing his file to the side. “All citizens can rest assured that my chiefs of security all around the kingdom are working day and night to ensure no threat, whether external or internal, will disrupt their daily lives. Now, on to my major announcement.”
