The next day, Lyra's team went all over the Red Moon Pack, doing security checks all over the territory. Lyra stationed warriors in all the strategic areas, ensuring there were enough scouts to raise an alert in case anyone tried a follow-up attack.
While Lyra and Zero supervised the security teams, Beryl was busy in the infirmary. When Lyra got back to the Alpha's compound that evening, she went to the infirmary to check on the progress.
Coincidentally, Beryl had just completed her round when Lyra got there.
“Have you sat down at all today?” Lyra asked, looking at her friend with concern. Beryl was visibly exhausted, and Lyra knew that it was not only because of the physical exertion of tending to so many patients.
When healers used their internal powers to heal, it drained them. Given the amount of patients with serious injuries who needed Beryl to use her own power, she must have pushed herself to her limit.
“I can now,” Beryl said. “Zero has been a real help around here.”
“Zero?” Lyra asked, and at that moment, Zero emerged from one of the doors leading to an inner part of the infirmary.
Beryl nodded. “Once he was done out there, he came over. His healing powers are quite prominent for a non-healer, you know.”
Lyra nodded, remembering when Zero had healed her. When he reached them, she said, “I need to talk to the two of you.”
“Is there anything wrong?” Zero asked, frowning.
“No,” Lyra replied, shaking her head. “I want to let you know that I've decided to stay, so I won't be going back to the place tomorrow as planned.”
Beryl and Zero exchanged glances, surprised by her announcement.
“Are you sure about that?” Beryl asked Lyra. “Julian is expecting you back right away.”
“I can't just leave,” Lyra said. “These people need my help to recover from the attack. Once I'm done with that, I'll go back to the palace.”
“Julian was reluctant enough to let you come here,” Zero said. “He’ll not like this.”
“It's not like I'm staying here forever,” Lyra said.
“Someone else can be sent to deal with this,” Zero said. “You came here to provide backup, and your work is done. The pack is no longer under threat. I'm sure the palace can spare someone else to come and oversee the reconstruction.”
“Who?” Lyra questioned. “I came here because there was no one to spare. I can handle this, so there's no need to disrupt someone else from their responsibilities.”
