“Master Aldus!” Beryl called when she saw the man's face clearly.

“Do you know him?” Lyra asked her.

“Yes,” Beryl replied. “He is a respected member of the royal pack, and he was once Julian's teacher.”

“Let's get him out of here first,” Lyra said, looking around. They were in an open place, and anyone who passed by would see them.

Helping him up, they led him behind a building and out of sight.

“What happened to you?” Beryl asked, using her flashlight. His clothes were bloodied from an obvious beating.

“The king tried to ask me about sensitive secret information, and I realised he is the Rogue King Nile. I had my suspicions before, but I wasn't sure. When he asked me about things His Majesty definitely knows, I realised my suspicions were right. I tried to expose him with a few questions, but he realised I had discovered his true identity. He tried to force me to give him the information he wanted, and when I refused he ordered my execution.” He looked from Beryl to Lyra. “I owe you two my life. If you ever need my assistance, I'll be happy to help.”

“If you could give us more information about the situation in the palace, that would be very helpful. We are trying to look for His Majesty,” Lyra told him.

“Right now, the palace is overrun by rogues,” Aldus informed them. “I have no idea where His Majesty is.”

“Is there anywhere you can think of that he could be, perhaps in hiding?” Beryl asked.

“There are secret passages and chambers in the palace that are only disclosed to the king and queen,” Aldus told them. “He might have used one of them. But if he was alive, he would have escaped the palace and arranged to come back and retake it with backup.” He sighed, his head falling forward in dejection. “If His Majesty is dead, we are done for. The witches have been working on experiments to take us down for years, and now it seems they have succeeded.”

“I don't think he is dead,” Lyra told him. “If he was dead, Nile would have already taken over everything. He would not still be hiding behind a false face, pretending to be Julian. You said he was asking you for secret information. That's a good sign, it means he does not have complete control yet.”
