After Beryl left with Master Aldus, Lyra ventured towards the main palace building alone. Unlike before, she came across more guards on the patrol, all of them moving briskly.
She realised they must be looking for her and Zero and Anna. That made it riskier to make progress towards the palace, but she finally managed to get there undetected.
She approached from the back and went in through a window. She thought about where the secret passages could be located. Julian's suite and his office seemed to be the most likely locations. But since Aldus had mentioned that there were several of them, they could also be in areas such as the study room, the library, or even a lounge room.
Deciding that Julian's bedroom was the most likely location, she started there. She made it to the upper floor using the service stairway, which was thankfully deserted.
There were no guards in the hallway, and when she got to Julian's room, she found the door unlocked. Stepping inside quickly, she shut it behind her.
She was welcomed by the sight of chaos. Things in the room had been thrown about, with the furniture overturned and other items scattered on the floor. Clearly, someone had already searched the room.
Moving quickly, Lyra started by checking the bookshelf in the room. All the books had been thrown onto the floor, and she wondered whether Nile had also been looking for the secret passage.
She found nothing on the bookshelf and moved on to the bedside table. She checked all the compartments and even moved it from its position against the wall, but there was nothing out of the ordinary. She did the same to the dresser and the closet.
After finding nothing in the room, she moved on to the bathroom. She pushed against every tile on the wall, moved to the floor, and even inspected the bathtub and the shower controls. She also checked the cabinets, but she did not find any hidden mechanism.
Refusing to give up, she sat down on the floor and closed her eyes. She tried to search with her mind, but there was no inkling of the connection between her and Julian.
Was he really dead?
Had she been lying to herself all this time?
As emotions welled up inside her, she pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes.
“Where are you? Please don't be dead,” she muttered. “Please.”
