“Hehe, you really know how to talk. You’re making me blush,” Sophia said with a smile before complimenting Freya in return. “But you’re gorgeous too! Your husband must absolutely dote on you, huh?”
“Oh, not really. He’s super busy, and I’m swamped with work too.” Spoiling her? Yeah, right. Freya couldn’t even picture what Louis would be like spoiling a woman. Actually, she couldn’t imagine him in any kind of romantic relationship. A man like him–so untouchable and polished–what kind of woman would even be worthy of that?
From that response, Sophia got exactly what she wanted: confirmation. So Louis didn’t have any special feelings for his side- character ex–wife after all. They must still be married due to some other complication.
“Well, men are all like that, aren’t they?” Sophia said with a faux–laugh. “Still, I guess it’s better for him to be busy with work than with other women.” She pulled out her phone. “Freya, I felt an instant connection with you. Since our kids go to the same school now, why don’t we add each other on WhatsApp? It’ll be nice to chat now and then.”
Freya didn’t feel particularly close to her. They’d only just met–how deep could any bond really be? But with Sophia being so warm and forward, she didn’t want to be rude. So she pulled out her phone and added her.
“Oh, right. You and Aiden are here together–is his dad off doing the check–in paperwork?” Sophia asked, feigning innocence.
“Oh, no. Aiden’s parents passed away in a car accident. My husband and I are the ones taking care of him now. He went to handle the paperwork.” Every time Freya said the word husband‘, she felt a pang of awkwardness. She wasn’t even really married. This “husband” had appeared out of nowhere—and their relationship was in name only. Sure, Louis was handsome, but the whole thing felt like a mess. And now, thanks to him, I’m technically a divorcée before I even start dating for real. A divorcée!
“Oh wow, your husband sounds really dependable. I have to go take care of Summer’s paperwork myself later,” Sophia replied with a smile.
But every time she said your husband, it grated on her. By now, the male lead should’ve been long separated from this old Freya. Instead, she was stuck here putting on a friendly face just to inch closer to the man who was supposed to belong to her. The irony was nauseating.
Freya nodded, unsure what else to say. After a moment, she found a new topic. “Oh, by the way, does Summer board here too? She seems so young.”
