After leaving the first private restaurant, Freya was riddled with guilt. If she hadn’t dragged Louis there, that jerk wouldn’t have had a chance to twist the knife. Feeling sorry, she gritted her teeth and made a bold decision: she’d go all in on tonight’s meal.
“That place wasn’t it. I know another private spot with great food. Let’s try that one,” she said.
Louis didn’t mind either way. But when they arrived at the second restaurant, he was once again surprised. This place was at least three times as expensive as the last. And yet somehow, Freya had still gone for it.
But just as they stepped into the lobby-
“Well, if it isn’t Mr. Louis! What a coincidence seeing you here!” A lean middle–aged man spotted them and hurried over with a grin.
You’ve got to be kidding–again?
Freya’s previously confident (albeit slightly hesitant) stride instantly turned heavy. Was she really doomed to only take the big guy to street stalls? Was that the only place they’d be safe from running into someone Louis knew? She’d finally psyched herself up to splurge on a nice dinner, and this was what she got?
Louis‘ gaze flickered subtly. Meanwhile, the skinny man seemed completely unaware of the awkwardness and strode up beaming, “Mr. Louis, are you here treating a lady to dinner? What a rare encounter–we’ve got to let me treat you this time. I really have to thank you for taking that shipment the other day. If it had stayed on my hands any longer, my cash flow would’ve snapped. Oh, and your project’s just about ready, isn’t it? Let me know when you launch–I’ll definitely support it!”
Louis kept a straight face and let his eyes fall on Freya for a beat before clarifying, “She’s the one treating, not me.”
The skinny man looked at Freya, then back at Louis. “Haha, Mr. Louis, you’re always joking. You, letting a woman pick up the bill? I know you’re not strapped for a meal like this, but since we bumped into each other, let me show a little appreciation.”
Freya glanced between the man and Louis, her mind slowly catching up to the conversation–and suddenly, she was confused.
Wait a minute. This guy wasn’t mocking Louis?
He’d just said Louis had taken some inventory off his hands. And that Louis‘ project was nearly finished? That it might even be launching soon?
But… wasn’t Louis supposedly bankrupt? Wasn’t he still scrambling behind the scenes trying to stage a comeback?
This comeback seemed… a little too fast. Barely two months?
And that line–not short on money for a place like this–what did that mean? Was it just polite small talk? Because as far as she knew, Louis didn’t have any income right now.
While she was still frozen in thought, Louis said something to the man that sent him on his way. Then he followed the waiter to their private dining room without a word. Freya hurried to keep up, her mind spinning as she stared at his back.
It had almost been two full months since she landed in this world. In that time, she’d sold her luxury goods, bought a small apartment, made some money from writing, and soon she’d be getting a sizable payout from the adaptation. She’d only interacted with Louis, Aiden, maybe a couple of Louis‘ friends–and her online buddy, who was the old Freya’s former
roommate.
That was it. Nothing else.
