“Then it’s settled. I’ll go ahead and get back to them. Once the contract is signed, they’ll wire you the money–after taxes, of course. Don’t worry, they won’t butcher your novel. Once the script work begins, I’ll let you know.” The editor was brisk and decisive. Freya responded that she had no problem with that.
As soon as the chat window closed, Freya sprang to her feet, hands on her hips, and burst into silent laughter like a madwoman looking up at the ceiling. Louis had just come out of the bathroom after washing his hands and was met with the sight of the usually soft and adorable Freya acting borderline deranged–half smug, half insanely delighted.
What on earth just happened–did she win the lottery?
In ten seconds flat, Freya’s mind raced from buying a house with the money, to investing it, to building a dream life. It was like she lived out an entire lifetime in her head. Then she looked down–only to meet Louis‘ surprised gaze.
Her smile froze. Quietly lowering her hands, she plopped back onto the couch and cleared her throat.
“Ahem… So, uh… my novel just got bought. I should be getting the payment in a few days.”
The joy in her voice couldn’t be hidden if she tried. It practically radiated from her, and it was contagious. Seeing her unable to stop smiling, Louis also gave a small, faint smile.” Then I guess last night’s dinner was really well–timed.”
“Yeah, totally.” Freya waved her hand with a grin. “It’s nothing, really. I just got a little overexcited. You go ahead and do your thing–I’m gonna get back to writing.”
As Louis shut his door, he could still hear cheerful humming from the living room. Hmm. Off–key.
Aiden pouted, clearly unhappy. “Freya, I remember someone promised she’d pick me up from school with my uncle.”
