Noah was about to speak, but Kendrick cut him off impatiently. “What, are you two just gonna stand here until I personally invite you to leave? Do I look like Louis, with that much patience?”

The two men didn’t say another word. They nodded quickly and turned to leave. Their female companions, curious about Kendrick, tried to sneak a glance at him, but they were immediately scolded and dragged away.

“Louis, seriously? If you had to come, fine, but why bring her? And if you did, at least give me a heads–up. Those two idiots actually had the nerve to show up in front of you, and you just let it slide? You’re way too easygoing.”

“It’s nothing. Just a couple of clowns.” Louis‘ tone remained calm. “But you–why are you even here? You usually avoid these events. What changed this time?”

Louis‘ demeanor was noticeably softer when talking to Kendrick, even carrying a hint of amusement.

Kendrick pouted, his voice carrying a rare hint of complaint. “I was worried you’d run into some troublemakers, so I had my manager cancel an event for me. Good thing I came–who knows what nonsense those two would’ve spouted otherwise?”

After speaking, he turned his head and glanced at Freya, his gaze sweeping over her from head to toe in open scrutiny.

Freya glanced down at herself. Nothing wrong with my outfit.

She touched her hair. Not messy. Confused, she looked back up–just in time to catch Kendrick’s evaluating gaze, which quickly turned into one of mild disdain.

Freya’s smile stiffened. If this were anyone else, I could talk back. But this is Louis‘ close friend. He’s standing up for him—what can I even say? Besides, given the original owner’s behavior, it was understandable that people would be suspicious.
