A Second Chance At Forever novel (Eleanor and Bernard) novel Chapter 1532

Bernard nestled his cheek into the nape of her neck, his breath warm and shaky. "I've never been one to fear death, but for some reason, since I've been with you, I've started to cherish life like never before."

Driven by this newfound will to live, Bernard had scoured the globe, consulting with all manner of doctors and healers, but the cure he so desperately sought eluded him. It seemed the faster time slipped through his fingers, the less hope remained…

In a panic, Eleanor clung to Bernard, feeling each of his words like a farewell, wrenching her heart with a silent grief.

With her fingers gently tracing patterns on the back of Bernard's head, she whispered, "You've got me, you've got the kids. You have to hang on. What would we do without you?"

This time, Bernard didn't have an answer as to what she should do. The man who had been fighting a relentless battle for five years felt life's grip loosening on him, second by second…

The headaches had become more frequent and intense, reaching a point where he tossed and turned in agony, fearing he might not live long enough to see the chip removed, that he might depart this world too soon. Before that day came, he knew he had to set his affairs in order…

A heavy sadness weighed on Bernard's heart, but what he couldn't bear to leave behind was the woman in his arms. Sensing her silent tears once again, he lowered his head and captured her lips in a deep, consoling kiss.

During their passionate entwinement, it seemed as if they could momentarily displace the lingering grief between them. The refuge they found in their sexual connection kept them interlinked into the night.

It wasn't until Eleanor could take no more that Bernard reluctantly released her, yet he refused to part from her warmth. Cherishing every moment, he pulled her close, letting her rest atop him as she drifted into slumber.

Bathed in the moonlight streaming through the porthole of their ship's cabin, Bernard gazed at Eleanor's ageless face and murmured softly, "Sweetheart, I want your next lifetime too, but you've already promised it to Garett."

Still awake, Eleanor pressed against his chest and replied softly, "If you leave this world before me, I swear, in my next life, I won't give myself to you…"

Her words were a bittersweet dagger, and Bernard held her tighter, a pang of sadness in his voice. "After all these years, you're still so cruel. Don't you know how jealous your husband can get?"

Tears traced Eleanor's cheeks as she spoke. "Then stay with me. Live. And I'll promise you not just my next life, but every life after, for eternity, okay?"

His sorrow dissipated at her words. "Eternity seems like a long time... Just promise me the next life, that'll be enough…"
