The buzz around his robot development project couldn't have escaped Cedric's notice. Even before Bernard arrived, Cedric was stationed at the machine, fine-tuning its features without a break.
Peering through the glass, Bernard watched as Cedric furiously typed away, the robot beside him speaking as naturally as any human under his command. A slow smile began to form on Bernard's lips.
"Cedric..."
Hearing Bernard's voice, Cedric halted his movements, turned, and faced him. Over the recent years, Bernard had poured his heart and soul into this robot, enduring pain and exhaustion, working tirelessly day and night.
Unable to watch silently, Cedric took it upon himself to assist. Though his skills paled in comparison to Bernard's, his persistent efforts eventually brought the project to completion.
"Bernard, when shall we introduce it to Eleanor?"
Pushing aside Aidyn's supportive arm, Bernard stood upright and approached the robot. He reached behind its head to flip a switch and, hearing it speak in a tone identical to his own, his smile widened.
"This way, she won't feel lonely after I'm gone..."
The chip Bernard developed was not a matter of life or death but held recordings of conversations for the next ten or twenty years.
Eleanor would need to keep living if she wanted to hear everything he had to say, effectively tying her to life and preventing any rash decisions.
He was grateful that the robot was perfected before his departure, so he wouldn't leave with any regrets. His only sorrow was the brief time he had left with her...
Thinking of his impending separation from Eleanor, Bernard's smile faded. "Cedric, after I'm gone, bring the robot to her. And please, make sure to support Damian in managing the Laurence Group..."
Cedric, a big man, couldn't help but tear up at Bernard's final requests. "Bernard, is there really no other way?"
Despite consulting numerous doctors and even considering radical surgeries, Bernard had lost all hope. "I hope in the next life, we can still be brothers."

The readers' comments on the novel: A Second Chance At Forever novel (Eleanor and Bernard)
Loved the story, many times caught in so much actually crying with the situation. Wish had more chapters to a better ending....
It's weird that the story went from narrative to slang use. Good story so far though...
