A Second Chance At Forever novel (Eleanor and Bernard) novel Chapter 1540

The fallen trees from the snow-capped mountain lay across the border of light and shadow like ancient logs, a barrier between two worlds. Bernard, initially intending to step over, found himself inexplicably drawn to sit upon one of these weathered timbers instead.

His son Damian, following closely behind, couldn't help but walk over, umbrella in hand.

The umbrella shielded them from the falling snowflakes, causing Bernard's long lashes to flutter slightly. Without turning around, he simply stretched out his broad hand and patted the log beside him, inviting, "Have a seat."

Damian, worried about his father getting wet, sat close, keeping the umbrella open but tilted to cover his father. Today, Bernard seemed different. Clad in his usual black coat and wrapped in a white scarf, his meticulously groomed appearance subtly hinted at a farewell.

"Father," Damian uttered, unsure of what to say next. It seemed everything that needed to be said had already been exchanged. Yet, a feeling of unspoken regret lingered between them, a sense of something important left unsaid.

Bernard glanced towards Damian, dressed in his light suit, and naturally draped his coat over his son. Damian tried to refuse and give it back, but his father's firm hand stopped him.

"This is all I can do for you now."

This distance, both close and far, left Damian at a loss for words. Tightening the coat around him, he felt enveloped in his father's warmth, a childlike sense of protection in the embrace.

They sat in silence, the endless snow stretching beyond the edge of their umbrella. After a long pause, Damian, his voice tinged with reluctance, whispered, "Father, there's so much more you can do for me. Believe me, I will retrieve that chip."

Bernard, as regal as ever in his black suit, gazed into the snowfall, a slight smile on his lips. "You've worked on this for three years. Of course, I believe you can."

Damian, surprised, looked at Bernard. "Father, you knew about my medical studies?"

The all-knowing father raised an eyebrow, "When you were little, you'd pretend to be sick to get attention from me and your mother. We both knew."

The implication was clear; the secrets between mother and son were no secrets at all to him. He had always been aware, yet never intervened.
