A Second Chance At Forever novel (Eleanor and Bernard) novel Chapter 1541

Henry wasn't exactly a saint, nor was he the devil incarnate. However, for power and prestige, he had crossed many moral lines. It's not like he had a body count to his name, but let's just say his hands weren't clean. Such was the man, and as the decades piled up, so did the toll of his choices.

When the end seemed near, he harbored no complaints. The only regret... Henry turned back to look at the sprawling villa, his gaze landing on the figure standing by the patio door. His eyes were calm, yet the depths revealed a lingering reluctance. "If I falter, promise me you'll look after your mother, for all her days."

Damian knew the bond between his parents was irreplaceable, deep beyond measure. How could he take his father's place? "Dad, the promises you made are yours to keep, not mine to inherit."

Henry knew his son's tough exterior masked a tender heart. If he was no longer around, Damian would be the one to care for Margaret. He had made preparations, yet he feared Margaret's stubbornness might lead her to despair. "Your mother may seem gentle, but she's stubborn. If she ever does something foolish... You'll need to find a way to stop her."

Damian couldn't stand such talks; they sounded too much like last words. "Dad, I've got everything under control. Give me two more months, and I promise, you and Mom will be walking hand in hand into the sunset of your lives."

Henry smiled, a fleeting expression like the wind through snow-laden trees, the chirping of birds in the forest, clouds drifting across the sky, a misty haze, fish swimming in a river—so vivid yet elusive, like a man about to depart, stepping into the sunlight, yet aligned with the universe, moving towards his final rest.

Damian couldn't grasp such a father, feeling as if he was running out of time for farewells. He pulled out a neatly wrapped gift from his jacket pocket and handed it over. "This was meant for your birthday, but for some reason, I felt compelled to give it to you today."

Henry's eyes softened as he took the gift, his slender fingers unwrapping it to reveal an exquisite watch. "Since you were ten, you've given me a gift every year. What I missed in my youth, I've found in you and your mother. I have no regrets."

He chuckled as he examined the watch, noticing it matched the one Margaret had given him. "She must have told you I like watches, right?"

Damian helped him strap it on, "This time, I didn't ask Mom. If we both thought of the same gift, it just shows how much both of us want to spend every moment with you."

Such words warmed Henry's heart like the sun's rays breaking through the clouds. "Today's your birthday, and here you are, giving me such a precious gift. Seems I need to up my game."

At this, Damian looked somewhat resigned. "Dad, maybe skip the gifts this year. I don't really need anything..."
