"Can you tell the difference between salt and sugar yet?"
Bernard looked at Eleanor, who had asked the question, and shook his head slightly.
Seeing this, Damian's thick brows furrowed like distant mountains... Why did he have a bad feeling about this?
His premonition was confirmed after trying the steak that no amount of chewing would tenderize.
Especially when he caught Aidyn and Scott, those two old pranksters, trying to stifle their laughter, Damian knew he had been duped.
Fighting the urge to gag, he glanced at Elwood and Selene, who were still in their high school uniforms, "Wanna give it a try?"
Elwood and Selene, eyes glued to the plate, shook their heads frantically, "My dad said even the dog refuses Bernard’s cooking... we're definitely not trying it..."
Damian: ...
Seeing Damian’s exasperated expression brought sheer joy to Elwood and Selene, "Big bro, this is Uncle Bernard's special birthday gift for you. You gotta eat it all up, otherwise, you'd be letting him down..."
The man at the head of the table, also wearing an expectant look, watched his son. Damian could read the 'eat it all up' message in his eyes and swallowed hard.
Trembling, he picked up his knife and fork, internally grumbling about why of all gifts, it had to be his old man's cooking. Wasn't this like diving into a dumpster to compete with strays for food?
Sighing, Damian resigned himself to his fate and began cutting another piece of the steak, only to chew on what turned out to be a piece of plastic wrap?!
As he pulled a plastic bag out of his mouth, the surrounding Laurence, Sharp, and Pine families first showed shock, then burst into laughter...
Pearce Hooper, who was filming, captured this warm moment, pressing the shutter swiftly. He had taken a harmonious picture at Hailey's wedding once, but today's scene, though missing some and gaining others, still reflected life's fleeting nature. Perhaps life is just a brief glimpse, but capturing these beautiful moments makes it all worthwhile...
After Damian found the plastic wrap, he couldn't bear to continue with the meal and instead reached out for gifts from others to divert attention.
As the clock struck twelve, Bernard felt as if the strings in his brain snapped with the chimes, akin to a chip being torn apart by recurring brain cancer, blood flowing backward...

The readers' comments on the novel: A Second Chance At Forever novel (Eleanor and Bernard)
Loved the story, many times caught in so much actually crying with the situation. Wish had more chapters to a better ending....
It's weird that the story went from narrative to slang use. Good story so far though...
