Chapter 399
ALEXANDER
“I don’t know.”
The words sat heavily between us.
For a brief second, Helen didn’t react.
She just stared at me.
Then slowly–very slowly–she straightened in her seat.
“What do you mean… you don’t know?”

The report.
The condition he was in.
“He wasn’t dead,” I added. “Barely breathing, but still alive. They brought him in.”
Helen didn’t speak.
Didn’t ask any more questions, but I knew better.
So I continued.

Helen leaned back slightly this time, her fingers tapping once against the armrest as she processed it.
“And you kept him,” she said.
It wasn’t a question.
“I did,” I answered.
There was no hesitation in that.
I didn’t owe her justification for it.
But I knew she would still weigh it anyway.
Her gaze lingered on me for a moment longer, like she was still placing the pieces together.
Then I leaned forward again.
“Can we get back to Faye?” I asked.
My voice was steady, but deep down, I wasn’t.
“She’s the one we should be focusing on.”
Helen didn’t respond immediately.
So I went on.
“I don’t know what this is yet,” I said. “But I know it’s not normal.”
The dream, or whatever it was.
Roman understanding parts of it.
It all pointed somewhere.
Somewhere I didn’t like.
“And if this is what I think it is…” I exhaled slowly. “Then we don’t have time to sit around dissecting everything else.”
My jaw tightened slightly.
“The full moon is coming.”
That alone was enough reason for concern. Everything intensified during the full moon.
But with everything else layered on top of it-

“I don’t know what happens to her when it comes,” I added quietly. “But I don’t want to find out the hard way.”
For the first time since I started speaking, there was a flicker of something in my mother’s expression that wasn’t calculation.
Concern.
She shifted slightly.
“I am not ignoring Faye,” she said.
Her tone was calm. “I am looking into it.”
I frowned faintly.
“By asking about Roman instead?”
“Yes,” she said simply.
Like it was obvious.
Like I should have already understood the connection.
Before I could respond, she took a deep breath.
“If what you described is accurate,” she continued, “then this is not just about a dream.”
That much I already knew.
“This is layered,” she added. “It’s all connected.”
Her gaze held mine.
“And that means every detail matters,” she said.
I didn’t argue.
Because part of me knew she was right.
Even if I didn’t like the direction it was going.
Still-
“That doesn’t change the fact that Faye is the one at risk,” I said.
“And I am not forgetting that,” Helen replied.

Her tone didn’t rise.
“Which is why,” she continued, “I need to see them.”
I stilled slightly.
“Them?” I repeated.
“Faye,” she said. “And the boy.”
Roman.
“She should have come with you,” Helen added, almost as an afterthought.
That didn’t sit well with me.

“You know that isn’t possible, not after the experience she had here the last time she came,” I
said.
Helen didn’t argue.
She just rose to her feet.
“I will go with you,” she said.
I blinked once.
Not because I didn’t hear her.
But because I did.
And I wasn’t sure I liked it.
“To Blood Crescent,” she clarified.
Of course.
Where else?
A part of me immediately started calculating.
Timing, distance, delay.
Because I hadn’t planned to stay here this long.
Coming to see her had already taken time I didn’t feel like I could afford to lose.
If she insisted on preparations-

On waiting and leaving tomorrow…
My jaw tightened slightly at the thought.
That would slow everything down.
And right now-
Time was the one thing I didn’t want to waste.
I hadn’t said anything yet.
But apparently, I didn’t need to.
Helen spoke again.
Like she had read the thought before I had even fully formed it.
“We leave immediately,” she said.
