Chapter 431
THIRD POV
Helen did not wait for morning to settle properly into the house.

There was no pacing outside the chambers this time, no hesitation at doorways, no second thoughts about timing or propriety. She simply moved–decisively, with a clarity that came from a night of no sleep and a mind that refused to rest.
The corridor leading to Alexander and Faye’s chambers was still quiet when she arrived. Most of the house remained asleep, the kind of early morning silence that usually meant peace. But Helen carried none of that peace with her.
She lifted her hand and knocked.
Once.
Then again.
Firm enough to be heard.
Inside, movement followed almost immediately.
A pause.
Then the door opened.
Alexander stood there.
Not fully alert yet, but already shifting into awareness the moment he saw her.
At his door.
At this hour.
His brows pulled together slightly as he took in her appearance–still composed, still dressed from the night before, eyes carrying the unmistakable weight of someone who had not slept.
“What is it?” he asked at once.
No greetings.
No delay.
Just instinct.

Helen didn’t waste time either.
“We need to talk,” she said simply.
Something in her tone made the air shift.
Alexander studied her for a second longer, then stepped aside without argument.
“Come in.”
Helen entered.

The sitting room was dimmer than the hallway, the early light outside barely filtering through the curtains. The atmosphere inside was calm–but it was a fragile kind of calm, the kind that could break easily under the wrong words.
Alexander closed the door behind her.
Immediately, his attention returned to her.
“Where is Faye?” Helen asked.
Her tone had not changed.
Still direct.
Still focused.
Alexander turned slightly toward the bedroom door before answering.
“Asleep.”
A pause.
Then Helen’s eyes sharpened slightly.
“How is she?”
Alexander exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair as he moved further into the room.
“Same,” he said. “The pain didn’t return last night.”
That should have been good news.
But neither of them treated it like it was.
Alexander’s jaw tightened slightly before he continued.
“But something happened.”

Helen’s gaze lifted.
“What kind of something?”
Alexander hesitated briefly, like he was still deciding how to frame it.
Then he spoke.
“She started walking in her sleep.”
Helen didn’t react outwardly, but something in her focus sharpened immediately.
“She got out of bed,” Alexander continued, “and almost left the room.”
His voice lowered slightly.
“I stopped her in time.”
A pause.
Then-
“She said she heard a voice calling her.”
The silence that followed was heavier than the words themselves.
Helen’s expression remained controlled, but her mind was already moving faster than her body allowed her to show.
“And?” she asked.
Alexander looked at her directly now.
“And she said she can see the mark clearly.”
That was it.
The shift.
It wasn’t visible, but it was immediate.
Helen’s posture changed ever so slightly.
Not fear.
Not shock.
But confirmation.

“Then we’re out of time,” she said.
Alexander frowned.
“What?”

Helen stepped further into the room now, her voice steady but no longer leaving room for softness.
“We’re out of time,” she repeated. “You need to wake her up. Now.”
Alexander didn’t move.
His expression tightened.
“Why?”
Helen didn’t blink.
“Because there is something I need to do,” she said, “and I cannot do it without her consent.”
That got his attention.
Before he could respond, the bedroom door opened.
Faye stepped out.
Still partially disoriented from sleep, her hair slightly undone, her presence immediately pulling the attention in the room toward her.
Her eyes moved from Alexander to Helen.
Then she spoke.
“What is going on?”
The question was simple.
But the room did not treat it that way.
Helen turned toward her fully.
Alexander stayed where he was, watching both of them now.
Faye stepped further into the room, more alert now as she sensed the shift in atmosphere.
And then they all sat.
Not because it was comfortable.

But because whatever was about to be said required it.
Helen didn’t delay.
“The truth,” she began, “is that if you do not submit yourself for the ritual–you will die.”
A pause.
Faye didn’t react immediately.
Not because she didn’t understand.
But because she had already suspected it.
Somewhere in the back of her mind, she had known.
But hearing it spoken out loud changed the weight of it completely.
Helen continued.
“And if you do submit yourself,” she added, “you will still die.”
Silence.
It didn’t explode.
It didn’t break.
It just settled heavily over the room.
Alexander sat back slightly, his expression unreadable for a moment as his gaze shifted between Helen and Faye.
Faye, on the other hand, didn’t speak.
She simply stared at Helen.
Then finally-
“You chose to say that in front of me,” she said quietly.
It wasn’t anger.
It was something deeper.
Helen didn’t flinch.
“Yes,” she said. “Because it is the truth.”

Another silence followed.
Thicker now.
More contained.
Alexander finally spoke.
“Explain,” he said.
Just one word.
Controlled.
But firm.
Helen turned slightly toward him.
“The spell on her cannot be reversed,” she said. “Not in the way you would hope for. Not cleanly. Not safely.”
Her gaze moved back to Faye.
“The best chance she has… is to go through the ritual.”
Faye’s jaw tightened slightly.
But Helen wasn’t finished.
“Before that happens,” she continued, “I will bind her life to another person.”
Alexander’s expression shifted immediately.
Faye frowned.
“Bind?” Alexander repeated.
Helen nodded.
“Yes.”
Her voice remained steady.
“When she dies during the ritual–and she will die–the binding will allow her life force to be pulled back. She will be revived.”
Faye blinked once.
Slowly.

Trying to process it.
“And the one who cast the spell,” Helen added, “will die instead.”
That changed the air again.
It wasn’t just survival.
It was reversal.
Retribution.
Alexander leaned forward slightly now.
“And if it fails?” he asked.
Helen didn’t look away.
“If the binding fails,” she said, “and she cannot be revived…”
A pause.
Then-
“I will die with her.”
The silence that followed was different this time.
Heavier.
More absolute.
Faye’s expression shifted slightly now.
But confusion mixed with disbelief.
“This is…” she started, then stopped.
Her eyes flicked between them.
“Dark magic,” she finished quietly.
Alexander exhaled slowly through his nose, clearly trying to hold onto control of his reaction.
“This is not something you just decide,” he said. “Where did you even get this from?”
Faye nodded slightly in agreement.
“That’s not normal,” she added.

Helen’s gaze remained steady on them both.
“There is a lot you do not know about me,” she said simply.
A beat.
Then she added-
“But now is not the time to tell stories.”
Her voice sharpened slightly.
“We are running out of time.”
