Chapter 503

JASON

My phone started ringing again.

I didn’t even need to look at the screen.

I already knew who it was.

The sound echoed through the office for several seconds while I continued staring out the

window.

I let it continue.

Behind me, I heard Sage move.

She had finally taken one of the chairs across from my desk after exhausting herself with all the

pacing and dramatic reactions.

The phone kept ringing.

Sage looked at me.

Then at the phone.

Then back at me.

“You know it’s not going to stop ringing if you keep ignoring it.”

I didn’t answer.

The phone continued vibrating across the desk.

Sage frowned.

“Are you not going to pick that up?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Sage blinked.

“No?”

I turned away from the window and looked at the screen for the first time.

Just as expected.

Conrad.

Again.

I scoffed.

“Definitely not,” I said.

Sage tilted her head.

“Why?”

I walked back toward my desk and dropped into my chair.

The phone continued ringing.

Because apparently Conrad had decided persistence was going to solve his problems.

Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t going to solve mine.

I leaned back and crossed my arms. “Because I have nothing to say to him.”

Sage frowned harder.

“What does that mean?”

I stared at the ceiling. “It means exactly what it sounds like.”

The phone finally stopped.

A few seconds of silence passed.

Then it started ringing again.

Unbelievable.

I laughed bitterly.

“Look at that.”

Sage followed my gaze.

The screen lit up again.

Conrad.

Still calling.

Still waiting for an answer I couldn’t give him.

“What does he want?” Sage asked.

I gave her a flat look.

“What do you think he wants?”

She opened her mouth.

Then paused.

Then her eyes widened slightly.

“Oh.”

Exactly.

Oh.

Conrad wasn’t calling because he wanted to discuss the weather.

Or because he suddenly missed my company.

He was calling because his supplies hadn’t arrived.

The supplies he had paid for.

The supplies my pack had promised would be delivered.

The supplies that had vanished somewhere between Silver Hollow and North Ridge.

Trubbed my face.

“I’ve already delayed him all week.”

The phone continued ringing.

“I told him the shipment was on the way. I told him there was a slight delay. I told him we’d handle

it.”

I laughed once.

A humorless sound.

“And now what exactly am I supposed to say?”

Sage shrugged. “The truth?”

I stared at her. “The truth?”

“Yes,” she said.

I gestured toward the phone.

“You want me to answer that call and tell him that the shipment disappeared without a trace?”

Sage didn’t answer.

Because even she could hear how ridiculous it sounded.

I continued.

“You want me to tell him that the goods he paid for have been missing since the beginning of the

week and that I still have no explanation?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The phone finally stopped ringing.

Silence returned.

I almost felt relieved.

Almost.

Because now I knew he would probably call again later.

Or worse.

Send someone.

Sage leaned back in her chair.

“I still think you should talk to him.”

I rolled my eyes. “Of course you do.”

She pointed toward me.

“I’m serious.”

I scoffed. “So am I.”

Sage frowned.

“Who is Conrad anyway?”

That made me laugh.

It wasn’t funny.

But it perfectly summed up Sage.

Chapter 503

Half the time she didn’t care about politics until the politics walked directly into her life.

“Conrad is Alpha Conrad of North Ridge,” I said. She already knew that, of course.

“Oh,” she said.

Then shrugged.

I stared at her.

She blinked. “What?” she asked.

I shook my head.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Sage continued anyway.

“Conrad just became Alpha when…? Not long ago.”

I raised an eyebrow.

She sat up straighter.

Here we go.

She continued, “Jason, why are you acting like he’s suddenly some big shot?”

I stared at her.

She kept talking.

“Patrick dies, his lowlife beta becomes Alpha, and suddenly everyone acts like the sky is falling.”

I rubbed my temple.

“Sage.”

“What?”

“That’s not the point,” I said.

She folded her arms.

“Then what is the point?”

“The point,” I said slowly, “is that he paid for something.”

Sage opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then opened it again.

“Okay.”

“And I don’t have it.”

“Okay.”

“And I don’t know where it is.”

That finally shut her up.

For a moment.
