Chapter 508
THIRD POV
Helen made her way downstairs.
Her movements were calm and unhurried now.
By the time she reached the bottom of the staircase, every trace of weakness had been tucked away where no one could see it.
The living room came into view moments later.
Alexander was no longer standing where she had left him.
Instead, he was seated on one of the sofas.
His phone was pressed to his ear.
Helen slowed slightly.
She didn’t intend to eavesdrop.
But she didn’t need to.
Years of experience made certain things obvious.
The tone of Alexander’s voice.
His posture.
The clipped responses.
The focused expression.
It was work.
Pack business.
And based on the occasional words she caught, she already had a fairly good idea who was on the other
end.
Cole.
The two of them had worked together long enough that their conversations had developed a particular
rhythm.
One Helen recognized immediately.
“…No, forget them. It’s just a game.”
Alexander’s voice was calm.
Firm.

He listened for a few seconds before responding again.
don’t want assumptions.”
A pause.
“Verify it first.”
Another pause.
Then:
“Good.”
Helen smiled faintly.
Some things never changed.
Alexander had always been thorough.
If he wanted to know something, he would investigate every possible angle before reaching a conclusion.
But this wasn’t just anything. The way he looked at her said a lot.
She stepped fully into the room.
Almost immediately, Alexander noticed her.
His gaze lifted from the floor.
Their eyes met.
The change in his expression was subtle.
But Helen saw it.
He straightened slightly.
Then spoke into the phone again.
“Send me a full report.”
A pause.
“No, don’t wait.”
Another pause.
“I’ll review everything as soon as I arrive.”
His gaze remained on Helen.
Watching her.
Studying her.

“Send a reply immediately after that.”
Another pause.
Then:
“Good.”
A brief silence followed.
“Thanks, Cole.”
The call ended.
Alexander lowered the phone and slipped it into his pocket.
Helen continued toward him.
“Everything alright?”
Alexander nodded.
“Pack business.”
Helen didn’t press.
She understood boundaries better than most.
Besides, she already knew enough to recognize that whatever issue was occurring wasn’t serious enough
to warrant concern.
If it had been, Alexander wouldn’t still be sitting here.
He would have left immediately.
Helen settled into the armchair opposite him.
“Well,” she said lightly, “you’ve seen me.”
Alexander’s eyebrow lifted slightly.
Helen smiled.
A bright one.
The kind she knew worked on most people.
“You came all the way here to check on me.”
She spread her hands.
“As you can see, I’m perfectly fine.”
Alexander’s expression remained unconvinced.
“You should go attend to your duties.”

14e didn’t immediately respond.
Helen continued smiling.
“I officially release you.”
That earned a small laugh.
Finally.
“There it is.”
“There what is?”
“The part where you try to get rid of me,” Alexander said.
“I am not trying to get rid of you.”
Alexander gave her a look.
Helen maintained her innocence.
Which only made him laugh again.
A little shake of his head followed.
“You haven’t changed.”
“Neither have you.”
For a moment, silence settled between them.
Comfortable silence.
The kind that only existed between people who had known each other for a lifetime.
Helen studied him.
Her son.
Her first child.
The little boy who had once followed her around the house, asking endless questions.
The teenager who had tried so hard to appear grown while secretly needing reassurance.
The man who now carried the weight of an entire pack on his shoulders.
Time moved far too quickly.
One moment, children were learning how to walk.
The next, they were leading hundreds of people.
The realization tightened something in her chest.

Not painfully.
Just enough to remind her of everything she would eventually leave behind.
Helen pushed the thought away.
Not now.
She stood from her chair.
Alexander immediately rose as well.
Helen stepped closer.
Then wrapped her arms around him.
The hug surprised him.
She felt it.
Only for a second.
Then his arms came around her in return.
Helen smiled against his shoulder.
“Tell Faye something for me.”
Alexander nodded.
“What?”
Helen pulled back slightly.
–
“One of these days, I’m going to ask Irene to come home.”
A warmth entered her expression.
“She’ll bring Jeffrey.”
