Chapter 509-1
ALEXANDER
By the time I got back to the pack house, my mood had improved slightly.
Not because I had stopped worrying about Mother completely…
I hadn’t.
But seeing her up and moving around had helped.
At least a little.
She looked fine.
Sounded fine… and acted fine.
Which should have been enough to convince me.
Unfortunately, I had inherited my tendency to overthink from the very woman I had just visited.
So while part of me was reassured, another part remained suspicious.
I pushed the thought aside as I stepped out of the vehicle.
There were more immediate problems waiting for me.
The moment I entered the pack house, I headed straight toward my office.
By now, I already knew Cole would be waiting.
The man was incapable of leaving work unfinished.
Sure enough, the moment I opened the office door, I found him exactly where I expected.
Seated behind my desk.
Doing something on the computer.
Cole looked up immediately.
“Alpha.”
I stepped inside.
“Cole.”
Cole stood.
Then moved away from the desk.
I rolled my eyes.
“You know you can sit in that chair whether I’m here or not.”

* know,” he said.
“Yet you still act like it’s cursed.”
“It might be,” he said, smirking.
I snorted.
Cole ignored me completely.
He walked around the desk and settled into one of the chairs opposite it while I took my seat.
I leaned back.
“How bad is it?”
Cole’s expression immediately told me everything.
Not terrible.
Annoying.
Without saying a word, he reached for a document resting on top of a nearby folder.
Then slid it across the desk.
My name was written prominently across the front.
Interesting.
I picked it up.
Opened it.
And began reading.
The further I got, the harder it became to maintain a serious expression.
By the second page, I was fighting a smile.
By the third, I gave up entirely.
A laugh escaped me.
A genuine one.
I lowered the document and stared at it for another moment.
Then laughed again.
Across from me, Cole was trying very hard not to react.
Trying.
Failing.

Eventually, he let out a short laugh of his own.
“Glad you’re enjoying yourself; Cole said.
I shook my head.
“This is ridiculous,” I said.
“It is.”
I looked down at the letter again.
A formal summons.
An official allegation.
A
Apparently, I had led Blood Crescent warriors into Stonevale territory.
Not only that.
According to the accusation, I had ordered an invasion.
Killed Stonevale warriors.
It would have been perfect if it just ended there, because that was exactly what happened. I had no reason
to deny that… I’d do it all over again.
But they seemed to have been too excited while making the list.
They went further to add that my pack murdered an innocent woman in cold blood. The pack healer… in
her chambers.
I stared at the page.
Then laughed again.
Because if I didn’t laugh, I might actually become offended by how poorly constructed the accusation
୮
was.
“An innocent woman?” I repeated.
Cole rubbed his forehead.
“That’s apparently the angle they’re going with.”
“Incredible.”
The funny thing was that I could have actually killed that witch myself if I had gotten hold of her. And I
would have owned it.
But unfortunately, I didn’t. She disappeared with all the distractions.
“Is it possible this is true?” Cole asked. “Maybe one of the warriors-”

Cole shook his head
I placed the letter on the desk
“This might actually be my favorite accusation so far
Cole’s expression became slightly more serious›
“As entertaining as it is, the allegation itself is a problem.”
I nodded
“Agreed.”
Because despite how absurd it sounded, the implications were not amusing.
Not even slightly.
The room grew quieter.
I leaned back in my chair.
Cole folded his arms.
“This is serious,”
I nodded again…
“Extremely serious.”
The corner of his mouth twitched.
“Yet you still sound amused,” Cole said.
“I am amused,”
Then I shrugged. “And annoyed,” I added.
Because both emotions could exist simultaneously.

Cole exhaled. “The problem isn’t whether the accusation is true. The problem is what comes next.”
That was the important part.
The allegation itself was meaningless.
The consequences attached to it were not.
Cole gestured toward the letter.
“This will absolutely reach the council.”
I wasn’t surprised.
In fact, I had expected it.
Anything involving cross–pack conflict always attracted attention.

Particularly from people who had never stepped onto a battlefield in their lives.
“And when it does,” Cole continued, “the first thing they’re going to ask is why you led Blood Crescent
warriors into Stonevale territory in the first place.”
I rolled my eyes.
Cole ignored my reaction.
“You know they’re going to demand explanations. They weren’t even aware of what happened with the
Luna. How are you
going to go about it?”
I nodded. “Of course they are going to ask.”
“They’ll want a full report,” Cole said.
I sighed.
“And they’ll probably want it delivered over several painfully long meetings,” I said, “I know.”
Cole pointed a finger at me.
“Exactly.”
I leaned back farther.
Then crossed my arms.
“But I don’t owe them an explanation, Cole.”
Cole wasn’t surprised by the response.
Mostly because he had probably expected it.

“You keep saying that But you know that’s not how they’ll see it.”
Well, I don’t particularly care how they’ll see it.”
And I meant that.
My patience for that part of politics had never been particularly strong.
If anything, it had worsened over the years.
The council had its place.
I understood that.
I respected that… to a point.
But there was a difference between governance and interference!
Far too many council members confused the two.
“The majority of them know nothing about war,” I said.
Cole remained silent.
Which was usually a sign he agreed.

“They sit comfortably in their chairs. They criticize decisions made on battlefields they’ve never stepped foot on,” I said. “They want to control which fight to pick and which fight to avoid. That’s nonsense.”
Cole’s expression remained carefully neutral.
I continued.
“Kyle is the head of the warriors,” I said. “And he led the mission himself.”
Cole nodded.
I spread my hands.
“As far as I’m concerned, Kyle is the only council member whose opinion on this matter, actually carries any weight.”
That finally earned a laugh from Cole.
A short one. “I knew you were going to say that.”
“Because it’s the truth.”
Cole nodded.
“It is.”
Then his expression shifted.
“But?”
Chapter
Lasked, knowing there was more.
“But being right isn’t going to stop the chaos.”
He was also right.
