No wonder he had looked so pleased with himself.
No wonder he had insisted I wait for him at the office.

He had needed me out of the way long enough to move this enormous painting into the living room without me seeing it.
I shook my head, still smiling.
It was almost funny when I thought about it.
Alexander could have placed it anywhere in the house.

He didn’t waste words…
He didn’t enjoy unnecessary attention.
He certainly wasn’t the type anyone would describe as flashy.
Which was exactly why moments like this affected me so much.
Because every once in a while, completely without warning, he would do something so ridiculously extravagant that it left me wondering where this version of him had been hiding all along.
He would pretend not to care about grand gestures.

I folded my arms thoughtfully.
What could I do?
Buying him a gift didn’t seem right.
Alexander wasn’t the sort of man who cared much about material things.
Maybe because he practically had everything.

Then an idea suddenly came to me.

Then another thought suddenly occurred to me.
I blinked and frowned slightly.
Wait.
What was Alexander’s favorite meal?
I stood there for several long seconds, searching my memory for an answer.

Absolutely nothing.
I frowned even harder.
That was embarrassing….
Very embarrassing.
I actually didn’t know what my own mate’s favorite meal was, even after all this time.
I rubbed the side of my forehead, feeling slightly guilty.
Then again, it wasn’t entirely my fault.

As soon as I got into the room, I scrolled through my contacts and tapped Irene’s name.
The phone rang several times, but she didn’t answer.
When the call disconnected, I lowered my phone and shrugged.
“She must be busy,” I murmured to myself.
It wasn’t a big deal. I could always call her again later.
Since I was probably going to head out to buy a few things anyway, I decided I might as well change into something more comfortable first.
I walked into the closet, looked through my clothes for a moment, and picked out a simple outfit. A few minutes later, I stepped back into the bedroom after changing, brushing a few loose strands of hair behind my ear.
Just then, my phone started ringing.
I smiled when I saw Irene’s name on the screen and answered immediately.
“Hello.”
“I’m so sorry I missed your call,” Irene said. “I was in the shower, and I only saw your missed call after I came back to the room.”
“It’s alright,” I replied. “I figured you were probably busy.”
“I’m glad you didn’t think I was ignoring you,” Irene said with a small laugh. “How have you been? How are things at Blood Crescent?”
“We’re doing fine,” I replied. “Everything is alright over here.”
“I’m happy to hear that,” Irene said. “And how are you doing personally?”
“I’m doing well too,” I answered.
“That’s good,” Irene said warmly. “So, what did you need? You don’t usually call me at this time of day unless there’s a reason.”
I smiled.
“You’re right,” I admitted. “I actually wanted to ask you something.”
