It seemed she had been overthinking things. She could doubt the laws of gravity before she doubted Holden's love for her. The reassurance was exactly what she needed.
Chuck continued to dish. "Winifred was too terrified to attend your engagement party, but Holden absolutely insisted. He told her he wanted her to witness your happiness firsthand so she would finally give up. He wanted to prove to her that you are the only woman he'll ever want."
"Really?" Tears of joy welled up in Iris's eyes. Holden's fierce devotion melted the walls around her heart.
"Absolutely. I have no reason to lie to you," Chuck laughed heartily.
Iris believed every word.
Chuck wasn't finished. "Winifred was furious. She asked him if he'd support whatever crazy thing you wanted to do. And you know what Holden said?"
Iris grabbed Chuck's arm, practically vibrating with excitement. "What did he say? Tell me exactly what he said!"
"He said, 'Of course. Iris is my entire world.'"
She was Holden's entire world. And he was her irreplaceable, absolute one-and-only.
The following day, Winifred received a call from Nelly Sutton, requesting her presence at the estate. Strangely, a private car wasn't sent to pick her up this time.
Autumn rain drifted down from the gray sky, carrying a sharp, biting chill. The wind drove the icy droplets sideways against her face. Carrying her heavy medical bag, Winifred popped open an umbrella and headed to the street to hail a cab.
As her ride-share navigated toward the Sutton Mansion, the household was buzzing with activity.
Iris had sprained her ankle. She had been scheduled to meet with the television network today for pre-production on *Starstruck Encounters*, but the injury had forced her to take a sick day. Since the shoot was pressing, Nelly was hovering over her, deeply concerned.
Nelly had been dreaming of this for days. Ever since she heard Dr. Adams's prestigious name at a recent wedding, she had been desperate to upgrade her medical care, hoping his expertise could secure her a longer, healthier life.
"Wonderful, wonderful!" Nelly beamed, patting Iris's soft hand. "You are such a thoughtful girl. This is why I adore you."
Iris leaned her head affectionately against Nelly's leg, chatting in her sweetest, softest voice. "I also have a set of botanical beauty creams formulated from holistic extracts that I want to give you! It's incredible. People who try it end up buying ten jars at a time. It gives you this flawless, luminous glow, completely safe and natural. They say the results are like getting professional dermal fillers. Once you start using it, your skin will regain its radiance, and you'll look like a beautiful eighteen-year-old again!"
Nelly burst into joyous laughter, gently stroking Iris's cheek. Even if the cream didn't turn back the clock, just hearing the girl's sweet, honeyed words was enough to rejuvenate her.
Iris looked incredibly proud. "And the best part? That amazing beauty cream was also developed by Dr. Adams."
The wrinkles on Nelly's face deepened into a massive smile. "That is perfect! We'll replace Winifred and bring in Dr. Adams. Not only will he manage our health, but he can also take over the beauty regimens for all the women in the house. You've brought me an absolute treasure, my dear."
