Iris felt a bit too embarrassed to drink the coffee right away.
"Winifred went to the restroom. How about... we wait until she gets back? If she doesn't want it, I'll drink it."
She glanced down the hallway just as Winifred returned.
Winifred offered a tight, sarcastic smile. "You're so sweet and considerate, Iris. Always thinking of others. The coffee is yours. Drink up."
Winifred suppressed her urge to snap and walked straight over to her medical kit to pack her things. Iris's acupuncture session was done and her foot was perfectly fine. The treatment had cleared her meridians; she was practically glowing. It was time to leave.
Iris sipped the coffee, smiling sweetly. "Winifred, there's still some cake. Do you want a bite?"
Winifred instantly pictured the cake that Holden had absolutely mangled. They had essentially cross-contaminated the entire thing, eating from opposite ends and turning it into a messy pile of frosting.
And now they were offering it to her.
Which side was she supposed to eat? The left side with Holden's spit, or the right side with Iris's germs?
Disgusting.
Winifred turned her back, placing a hand over her heart. Being around these two was a constant test of her sanity. Getting angry felt pointless; fighting with them just made her look foolish.
Mocking Holden felt equally bad. He used to be a brilliant man, and laughing at his current manic state wasn't exactly a victory. After all, she had once married him. They must have been a match on some level back then. Now that the marriage was over, mocking her ex-husband was basically admitting her own past lack of judgment.
Winifred was about to leave when Iris put her cup down.
Holden immediately set his laptop on the low cabinet under the TV, stood up from his rocking chair, and crouched down to catch her.
Jordyn threw herself into his chest. He scooped her up, his eyes softening with affection. "What are you doing here, sweetie?"
The nanny rushed in behind her, looking terrified, clearly worried she'd be blamed for bringing Owen Morgan's child from a previous marriage into the Sutton household. She quickly explained.
"Jordyn refused to eat lunch and wouldn't take a nap. Around two o'clock, I turned my back to pour her some water, and in that split second, she threw a little stool straight out the window!"
Even though they lived in a detached villa and a toddler couldn't throw something far enough to hit a pedestrian, throwing objects from a window was incredibly dangerous.
The preschool teachers always warned against it, and the kids knew better.
