"Daddy! Daddy!" Jordyn cried out, stomping her little feet. "She still hasn't apologized, and she's getting away!"
Winifred tuned out the rest of the noise, grateful for the silence as she turned down a different aisle. She needed to focus on buying her baby's bowls. No matter how angry she was, she couldn't let this ruin her mission. Her family was waiting for her. She took a deep breath, fortified her resolve, and headed straight for the children's dinnerware section.
But as she approached, her heart sank. Several store clerks were hastily packing up the entire display.
"Excuse me, what are you doing?" Winifred asked, bewildered.
A middle-aged clerk glanced up at her. "Sold out."
Winifred didn't even need to ask. It was obviously Holden. This was exactly his style, and she shouldn't have been surprised. After all, he was holding his precious "daughter" in his arms, playing the role of the ultimate father. And what wouldn't a doting father do for his little princess? Buying out an entire store's inventory was just a drop in the bucket for him.
Fine. She would accept it.
This was the largest high-end supermarket in Kingsbridge. Surely they had more stock in the warehouse. She just had to wait for them to bring out the reserves. She had spotted a few adorable sets earlier, and she knew Annelise would be thrilled to have one. The thought of her daughter sipping soup from a flat takeout lid spurred her on. She wanted to bring home something beautiful to make up for the hardship.
Adjusting her expression into a polite smile, Winifred asked, "I'd really like to buy a children's bowl as well. Could you tell me when you'll be restocking the shelves?"
"No idea," the clerk muttered, not looking up from her packing tape.
Winifred pressed gently. "Is the warehouse far?"
The clerk huffed, clearly annoyed. "I just told you, everything is sold out."
"You mean... there's absolutely no inventory left in the back?"
"Correct."
Winifred was desperate. This was the flagship store for premium brands. They had the best quality and the widest selection. Before she could ask another question, a loader barked at her.
"Hey, lady, out of the way!"
A massive cardboard box was shoved toward her on a dolly. Winifred, still processing the disappointment, reacted a second too late.
She pushed the cart swiftly toward the checkout counters, which were swarming with people. As she paid, she noticed a commotion near the customer service desk. "Is there some sort of promotional giveaway today?" she asked the cashier.
The cashier shook her head. "No."
Just outside the registers, an elderly woman waiting for her friend overheard and chimed in. "Oh, some little girl's father just bought out the entire stock of children's bowls and is giving them away for free! Said it was to support his daughter doing a 'good deed'."
Right on cue, the woman's friend returned, proudly holding a pristine children's bowl. The two women examined it with awe.
"The quality is incredible... this must be expensive!"
"The clerk told me this one retails for three hundred dollars!"
"Wow... buying out the whole warehouse? That father must have spent tens of thousands."
"What a great dad. That little girl must be the apple of his eye."
