A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 164

Carrying a heavy heart full of resentment and sorrow, Winifred quietly left the store. They drove to another supermarket just to buy bowls, a detour that cost them an extra two hours.

By the time they finally arrived home, Winifred dropped her purse and collapsed face-first onto the sofa, completely drained.

Celeste hurried over, scooped Winifred up by her slender waist, and practically tossed her over her shoulder to carry her upstairs.

Seth, who had been taking a nap, heard the commotion and peeked out of his room.

"Go get your mom some clean clothes!" Celeste instructed. "She needs a hot shower. She's exhausted today."

Seth took off running, his little bare feet pattering against the floor. By the time Celeste had deposited Winifred in the bathroom, Seth had already arrived with a small basket containing her comfortable loungewear and fresh socks.

As Celeste helped a weary Winifred out of her clothes, Winifred watched her son's tiny back. Seth marched over to the shower controls, standing on his tiptoes. He couldn't reach the handle. He stretched further, going entirely en pointe, his little shorts riding up as he strained upward. His tiny arms reached as high as they possibly could, his muscles trembling with the effort.

Finally, his fingers grazed the handle and pushed it up.

*Whoosh!*

Water blasted out of the showerhead. Unable to dodge in time, Seth took the brunt of the spray straight to his back, his clothes instantly soaking through. Undeterred, he reached a little hand into the stream to test the temperature.

"Okay, Mommy, you can wash up now!" he announced, turning around and marching out of the bathroom, leaving little wet footprints in his wake.

Watching him, Winifred felt a surge of superhuman strength ignite within her. Whatever she had endured outside didn't matter. With a son like this, she was truly the luckiest person in the world.

Celeste unhooked Winifred's bra with a fond, exasperated smile. "I can't even imagine how incredible that boy is going to be when he grows up. But one thing is for sure—he's going to spend his whole life loving his mother."

"Oh, Celeste, you're making me emotional," Winifred murmured.

"Alright, alright, get in the water. Wash up and take a nap. I'm going to start on dinner."

"Thank you, Mommy!" Annelise cheered, clapping her hands happily.

Winifred smiled, though a brief pang of regret hit her. If she had been able to get the sets Jordyn had stolen out from under her, Annelise would have been even happier.

Beside her, Seth spoke up, his voice remarkably serious. "We must find contentment in what we have. Those who are content are always happy. We shouldn't compare ourselves to others, grieve over what we've lost, or regret what we couldn't get. Thank you, Mommy! You give us all your love, and that makes us the happiest family in the world."

Winifred blinked, her lingering melancholy instantly evaporating. She stared at her son in absolute awe.

Seth kept his expression stoic. "I was listening to a podcast the other day. The host was talking about the philosophy of contentment. He made some really good points, so I memorized them."

"The kid's a genius!" Fletcher gasped, wiping his hands on his floral apron.

"Sit down, sit down, let's eat," Celeste laughed, tugging at Fletcher's apron to pull him into a chair. She immediately dropped a massive chicken drumstick into his bowl. "Geniuses are just favorites of the universe. They're born brilliant. But for the rest of us normal folks, we just need to eat well. Enjoying a good meal is its own kind of brilliant life."
