The night was thick and heavy. In the gardens, the streetlamps cast a glow that caught the trunks of the trees, leaving the ground draped in shadow.
The Ancestral Wing was located in the rear of the estate, quite a distance away.
Golf carts were parked along the green path, but Jasmine ignored them, taking the lead on foot.
After they passed the fifth parked cart, Winifred spoke up. "Shouldn't we drive over?"
Jasmine shot the idea down instantly. "No. The family is hosting VIPs tonight. The master gave strict orders that no noise is to be made."
What kind of noise could an electric golf cart possibly make?
This was just another calculated trap.
Winifred quietly tore open a medicinal packet, emptying the contents into her small basket to keep on hand for self-defense.
As they walked past the North Wing, Rochelle’s booming voice pierced through the trees, carrying clearly to where Winifred stood.
"Mom is staying over at her parents' house tonight, she's not coming back. Go find your dad to keep you company!"
The person on the other end said something indistinct.
Rochelle exploded. "Has your father not come home again? He's out at some club with those deadbeat friends of his, isn't he?!"
...
Rochelle’s voice grew even louder, laced with fury. "That cheating piece of trash doesn't have a single ounce of responsibility! He doesn't care about his wife, he doesn't care about his kid, he just spends every day out there drinking and messing around!"
Winifred parted the branches. Not far away, under a streetlamp, Rochelle was standing outside her building, right next to a patch of flowers and shrubs.
"Hurry up!" Jasmine snapped coldly.
She was blaming Winifred for eavesdropping on the eldest daughter's private life.
Winifred didn't say a word.
They walked for a long, long time.
Finally.
Jasmine pulled open a small chain-link gate and pointed to an enclosed patch of greenery inside. "The herbs are in there. There was too much mint, so the gardeners pulled some up today. Go find what you need. I'll wait outside."
Winifred looked around.
This wasn't the Ancestral Wing.
In her memory, the Ancestral Wing was surrounded by towering ancient trees, the paths damp and shrouded in heavy shade.
It was late, the streetlamps were sparse, and visibility was terrible.
"Hurry up. The ladies have been waiting a long time," Jasmine urged.
Let's see who ends up dead this time!
"Ahhh!!" Jasmine screamed. "Dr. Shultz, where are you?!"
Winifred chuckled softly to herself. *Enjoy the bite, you asked for it.*
"Dr. Shultz! Dr. Shultz... come quick! I... I've been bitten by a snake!" Jasmine wailed.
Winifred casually filled her small basket with mint.
Then, taking her time, she strolled out.
"What are you screaming for? It's the middle of the night, you're scaring people."
Jasmine was sobbing. "There are snakes..."
Winifred smiled. "How is that possible? The Lockwood Mansion has over a dozen gardeners. Every corner is thoroughly sanitized. There aren't even mice, let alone venomous snakes."
"Waaaah..." Jasmine wept in sheer terror.
The Lockwood Mansion was home to the elite; of course, there shouldn't be pests.
But since Winifred was a thorn in Madeleine's side, the woman had specifically bought a batch of snakes just to poison her.
