A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 185

The young girl was clutching a crumpled two-hundred-dollar bill. But the maternity shop had sold out of the cheaper belly bands. The only ones left were name-brand, costing 299.

Faye was crying, begging the cashier to let her take the band first, explaining that her sister-in-law's surgery was almost over and she needed it immediately, promising to come back and pay the remaining 99 later.

The cashier was annoyed, claiming someone had pulled the exact same "emergency" excuse a few days ago, promised to come back with the money, and never did.

The two girls were arguing loudly.

Winifred walked in and quietly covered the difference.

Faye thanked her profusely.

Taking advantage of the situation, Winifred followed Faye back to the hospital, trailing her to the surgical wing on the 18th floor.

She was doing some covert reconnaissance.

When Winifred lived at the Lockwood Mansion, Faye was just a skinny, naive pre-teen. Arthur would occasionally bring her around, but she was never very bright, always clutching the hem of her shirt with wide, innocent eyes.

Three years later, Faye’s eyes were just as innocent; she was completely clueless.

Winifred observed carefully. Outside the operating room, she didn't see Arthur, nor did she see his son.

It was just Faye and her mother waiting.

Her mother seemed to be cut from the same cloth—simple and naive.

The two women sat there in silence.

When they got tired, they leaned against the wall and dozed off.

At 4:00 AM, the sister-in-law was wheeled out, and the nurses called for the family. Faye and her mother woke up, rubbed their eyes, and followed the orderlies.

The new mother was moved to a room on the 11th floor. Only then did Winifred leave.

She was exhausted too. She'd find time tomorrow to come back and investigate. A C-section required at least a three-day hospital stay, so she had time.

She took a cab back to the hotel; it was 5:00 AM. The sky was already beginning to lighten.

As she walked through the hotel's revolving doors, she caught sight of a group of men in suits rushing out from the right. One of them was clutching a newspaper, running so fast it flapped wildly in the air.

They looked incredibly anxious.

He shot a glance at Holden, who was taking a phone call in the lounge area, then turned his sharp gaze back to Winifred.

He offered her a stern warning. "Don't think that just because he's giving you a little attention, you're getting your old spot back. You're just a tool for him!"

He only waits for you when he needs you.

When he doesn't, you're just... the one left behind.

Don't mistake him using you for him loving you.

The woman Holden loved was Iris Morgan!

Holden finished his call and walked over. Lyndon gave a terse nod, gathered his men, and marched off with his chest puffed out.

Winifred digested Lyndon and Miles's words, getting the gist of it.

Then Holden approached her with a perfectly gentle smile.

"Winifred, where have you been? Why are you only getting back at dawn?"
