Dead?
Good! Winifred's lips twitched slightly.
Still standing in the elevator hallway, Iris also received a call from Madeleine. "Rochelle is dead! My poor Rochelle, she was only thirty-six... *wails*..."
Winifred was marched right back up by Holden. By the time they returned, Nelly had already heard the news from Iris.
Rochelle was dead. Only thirty-six years old! She was cut down in the prime of her life. Nelly couldn't help but draw parallels to her own daily battle with cancer. A surge of empathy and shared grief washed over her, filling her old eyes with tears.
And with those tears came a burning hatred for Winifred! If she hadn't turned off her phone last night, if she had rushed to the Lockwoods the second they asked for help, Rochelle might have survived.
Winifred had abandoned her medical ethics. She had refused to save a dying woman. A vibrant life had been snuffed out because of her.
"Get out of my sight! Never show your face in front of me again!" Nelly spat, seething with rage.
"Gladly," Winifred said, suppressing a smirk. This was exactly what she wanted. She had been waiting for this day for a long time.
Iris kept crying. "Mrs. Sutton, letting her go is too easy!"
Winifred needed to pay a price. A living, breathing woman was dead, and it was a senseless tragedy.
"Let's go to my suite first," Nelly said. She stepped into the elevator, leading the way.
The VIP elevator could only hold so many people. Winifred, Miles, and his men took the next one.
Miles already looked down on her, and knowing she was partially responsible for Rochelle's death made him hate her even more. Unwilling to even look at her, he and the two bodyguards stood in the far corner, keeping a wide distance.
Perfect.
Winifred checked her phone.
Leland had sent three messages.
The first: [Photo] [Family Time] [Happy Weekend]
It was a picture of him playing basketball with the twins.
All three were wearing matching jerseys.
Annie and Seth were so tiny, their jerseys tucked into their shorts, their little bodies stretching into a straight line as they jumped.
Annie's curly hair was tied up into a messy bun.
Leland had drawn a circle around it and added a caption: "I tied this. [Pretty, isn't it?]"
The second message: [Video] [Rookie Dad cooks lunch for the kids]
The tall man was wearing a white apron, handling a spatula with gentle, focused precision.
Already plated: shrimp and broccoli, garnished with sliced carrots.
Sizzling in the pan: creamy mashed potatoes with peas and ham.
Winifred couldn't help but smile.
She had no idea Leland could cook.
It looked delicious.
The elevator stopped on the 42nd floor, and she locked her phone.
Nelly was staying in the Presidential Suite, which featured a small conference room where the primary family members were now seated.
"What do we do with her?" Iris sobbed, her eyes red. "Rochelle is dead because of her!"
A life was a huge deal. Iris felt like the only way to get even was for Winifred to pay with her own life.
Winifred smiled faintly. "You're exaggerating, Ms. Morgan. I understand you're grieving your sister-in-law, but don't lose your grip on reality. I am Mrs. Sutton's contracted physician. I accompanied her to Seaport City solely to look after her health. Your sister-in-law dying has absolutely nothing to do with me."
"You—!" Iris shot up from her chair, pointing a trembling finger at Winifred. "If you had treated her in time, she wouldn't have died!"
Winifred fired back without missing a beat, "That's your family's own ungrateful karma! I was kind enough to escort Jasmine to the hospital, and she kicked me out, saying she belonged to Madeleine and wanted nothing to do with me. I left the hospital, my phone died, I missed the calls, and since I had no money, it took me a long time to get back here. I did absolutely nothing wrong!"
Iris obviously knew about the Jasmine situation.
That idiot!
She ruined everything!
Iris snapped her mouth shut.
With Holden in the room, trying to force the blame onto Winifred would make her look unreasonable and damage her image.
Nelly clearly wasn't satisfied either.
She looked at Holden. "Holden, how do you think we should handle this?"
