Listening to all this, Winifred felt both annoyed and amused. Once again, she was the one hurting everyone.
Oh! This time was even worse—not only was she hurting everyone, she had also killed Rochelle. She wondered how they'd punish her this time.
Holden’s face was deadly serious. "Technically, Mrs. Sutton, you sending your staff to help us is a favor. If they don't, we have no right to complain. Dr. Shultz is your employee, and she wasn't Rochelle's attending physician. We can't officially pin the blame on her for failing to save her."
"Hol... den!!" Iris's eyes went wide.
Were they really just going to let Winifred off the hook? That was a human life!
And Iris couldn't even bring up the most crucial detail: Madeleine was the one who had someone put the snakes inside the fenced-in herb garden in the backyard. But the snakes had escaped, meaning Winifred was likely the one who let them out. She wanted Winifred to take the fall for Rochelle's death, but she didn't dare say it out loud.
It was incredibly frustrating!
Holden continued, "Personally, I think you should fire her immediately, Mrs. Sutton. She was negligent in her duties and failed to uphold the medical oath to save lives and care for the public."
"Agreed!"
Nelly had been wanting to fire Winifred for a while. If Declan hadn't explicitly said he liked her, Nelly would never have kept her around this long.
After the events of last night, she had seen right through Winifred. She was just a low-class, hypocritical woman. Even if Declan liked her, the Sutton family wouldn't tolerate her presence any longer.
Holden added, "Have your lawyers draft a termination agreement. Cut all ties today, so when she can't survive in Kingsbridge, she won't come crawling back begging you to take her in."
That sounded perfect.
Nelly's brow finally relaxed.
Seeing this doctor end up homeless, destitute, and suffering a fate worse than death would be a fitting tribute to Rochelle's memory.
Iris perked up, too.
Holden was personally delivering the final blow, pushing Winifred to the brink.
Not only did it avenge Rochelle, but it also proved Holden had absolutely no lingering feelings for Winifred.
Holden still belonged entirely to her.
Winifred was more than satisfied with this arrangement and sat quietly, offering no objections.
The statement was just a few sentences long and was drafted quickly.
Nelly signed it and pressed her thumbprint.
When Winifred signed and pressed her own thumbprint, joy bloomed in her chest.
"You can leave now," Nelly ordered bluntly.
"Understood."
"From this moment on, we have absolutely no ties. Don't ever come crawling back to me, because I will never employ you again."
"Understood."
"Pack your things and leave this hotel immediately. You are no longer welcome on our property."
"Fine."
Winifred walked out without looking back.
He got down on one knee, his eyes shining with tears, and delivered a deeply emotional confession.
"Ms. Morgan, in the darkest moments of my life, you were the one who gave me the hope to keep living. You were my guiding light, giving me the courage and strength to move forward.
"Without you, I don't know what my life would look like."
Holden choked up slightly.
He pressed his thin lips together.
He took a moment to compose himself before continuing.
"Without you, I might have... fallen into the abyss, never to return. I might have grown old and grey, completely alone. Or maybe, I would have just given up on the world entirely and faded away...
"I am so grateful for you. Iris, you are the most important person in my life.
"I will cherish you, stand by you, and together, we will build a brilliant future.
"And right here, in front of the entire internet and all our honored guests, I make this promise: on our wedding day, I will present... the most important woman in my life with the ultimate gift."
Thunderous applause erupted.
The host teased, "Mr. Lockwood, could you give us a tiny hint? Just how... big is this gift?"
Holden looked deeply into Iris's eyes as she smiled radiantly.
"It is a very large, incredibly profound gift. When the time comes, I know Iris will never forget it. She will be so deeply, utterly... surprised by how much she loves me!"
