She continued smoothly, "You and Holden just got engaged. You've loved him for so many years and finally got your wish. Just focus on enjoying it."
Iris felt a surge of genuine emotion and nodded obediently.
Madeleine sighed softly. "Your sister is gone. Her passing just proves how fragile life is. Aside from wanting you both to embrace the present and live beautifully, I only have one obsession left... I am going to use Winifred's ashes to mourn Rochelle!"
As she said it, pure venom seemed to radiate from her very pores.
Her poor Rochelle, only thirty-six years old.
Leaving behind two young children, dying a grotesque, agonizing death, her face turning black from the venom.
And now she was lying in a freezing morgue in the dead of winter, waiting to be cremated...
Winifred had poisoned her daughter, and she was going to demand a life for a life!
Only after she burned Winifred to the ground would she finally lay her daughter to rest.
Footsteps.
The maid announced Holden's arrival just as he appeared in the doorway.
"Welcome home, Holden," Madeleine greeted him, her expression shifting instantly to a warm, loving smile.
"Hey," he nodded slightly. "The police contacted me today. They said they needed a statement regarding Dr. Shultz releasing the snake that caused the casualty."
Iris practically jogged over to him. "What did you tell them?"
Ahem...
Madeleine shot Iris a sharp look.
Right! Iris bit her lip and smoothly backed off.
Stepping back, she immediately flashed a sweet, radiant smile over her shoulder. "Honey, you haven't had dinner yet, have you? What are you craving? I'll go tell the kitchen to make it."
"Sure." But Holden didn't let her leave just yet. "Hold on. We need to talk about Winifred."
The atmosphere was perfect, a picture of absolute domestic bliss.
Then, Holden’s tone shifted slightly, adopting a casual, conversational cadence. "I just realized something, though. Winifred has changed. She's vicious now. She lashes out, she curses, she's manipulative, she lies, and she plays the victim."
Both Iris and Madeleine had seen that side of her recently.
It was entirely true.
Holden looked genuinely concerned. "Because of that, Mom, you have to be careful she isn't playing a longer game. We don't know if she’s been doing anything behind our backs to sabotage the family since she got back to Seaport City."
Iris immediately tensed up. "What do we do?"
Winifred really had become terrifyingly resourceful.
What if she had gathered some kind of evidence and stashed it somewhere they didn't know about?
Madeleine's expression hardened slightly. "Don't panic. I'll send a lawyer down to the precinct to probe her defenses."
