Three people sat in perfect harmony, seamlessly arranging exactly how Winifred Shultz was going to die.
Holden smiled in satisfaction. "I've got work to do."
Iris chased after him. "What do you want to eat? You haven't told me yet."
The man turned, his smile gentle. "Creamy chicken vermicelli."
Iris beamed. Holden was a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy; creamy chicken vermicelli was her absolute favorite.
"I'm skipping dinner tonight," she said with a coquettish laugh.
As a celebrity, her diet was notoriously strict. She'd debuted late, and staying camera-ready meant practically starving herself and living on protein shakes. She hadn't let herself indulge in her favorite dish for months.
Yet, he still remembered.
"It's freezing out. Eat something you love to warm up. You're too thin," his gentle voice washed over her like a soothing stream.
Madeleine, clearly pleased, chimed in. "He's right. You're far too skinny, Iris. Have a little something tonight to keep your strength up."
"I..." Iris hesitated, clearly moved.
Madeleine pressed on, "Holden is setting aside his own cravings just to coax you into eating your favorite meal. Be a good girl and join him."
"Alright," Iris said, flashing him a finger heart.
"I'll wait for you in the study," he replied.
"Mhm~"
After sending him off with a sweet smile, Iris rang the kitchen and ordered the creamy chicken vermicelli. The dish took time, requiring a rich, slow-simmered broth topped with delicate shredded chicken breast.
"Calling it 'wealth' sounds so tacky. I was just born for the princess life, okay?"
Madeleine chuckled brightly. "Yes, exactly! The princess life. Our lucky little princess."
"Of course," Iris hummed, still scrolling through her fans' confessions. "I've realized something. Fate is written in the stars. Take me, for example—I've got the princess life. And then there's Winifred, destined for absolute misery. What did she get for sacrificing so much for Holden? Nothing. She just paved the way for me to enjoy this life while she spirals into hell."
Speaking of fate, Madeleine nodded knowingly.
"Some people jump through hoops, working themselves to the bone, and what do they get? Nothing. A life of suffering. No matter how hard they struggle, they'll never be you."
After a bit more cheerful gossiping, Iris remembered something Holden had mentioned before leaving. Madeleine had planned to send a lawyer to probe Winifred for information.
"Madeleine, do you have a lawyer in mind yet?"
Her studio's legal team was excellent. She could send someone over if needed.
