A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 202

"I have someone," Madeleine said, brimming with confidence. "I'll make the arrangements."

"Who are you hiring?" Iris asked.

"Jenson Roth," the older woman replied, casually dropping the name.

Iris looked genuinely impressed. "Wow. I didn't realize a high-society lady like you had connections with Mr. Roth."

Madeleine tapped her on the forehead with a smirk. "Think about it. I went from being a chauffeur's daughter to marrying Roland Lockwood and becoming the wife of Seaport City's wealthiest man. You think I did that by sitting around?"

"Incredible!" Iris gave her a thumbs-up.

But then a thought struck her.

"Wait... if the lawyer is on our side, under what pretense will he visit Winifred at the detention center?"

Madeleine's smile faded into a calculating smirk. "He'll tell her Holden sent him. She'll practically run to the visitation room."

Realization dawned on Iris.

"That's brilliant! She'll think Holden is stepping in out of lingering affection. She'll spill every last secret to him."

When the creamy chicken vermicelli was finally ready, Iris carried the tray to the study herself.

Holden looked up, immediately dropping his mouse and rushing over to take it from her.

"It's too heavy and hot! You should have had a maid bring it. Why are you carrying this?"

Iris relinquished the tray, smiling sweetly. "I wanted to take care of you myself."

He returned her smile. "Well, now it's my turn to take care of you."

Iris watched as his long, elegant fingers picked up a small bowl, carefully serving her a portion from the pristine porcelain pot...

"Eat up," he said, handing her the perfect, customized bowl.

"Also," Holden added gently, "my mother mentioned hiring a lawyer. She's in her sixties and her health isn't great. Taking on all this stress is hard on her. Please check on her when you have the time."

Iris smiled warmly. "Don't worry, she's got it handled. She hired Jenson Roth."

Holden's eyes darkened fractionally. "Jenson Roth?"

"Yeah, the famous one! The guy who helped that cheating wife drain all her husband's assets, won the case, secured the divorce, and made sure the ex-husband never got his company back."

Mr. Roth was legendary. His silver tongue was deadlier than a machine gun. Whoever he targeted was doomed. He could spin lies into truth and paint victims as villains. He was the attorney who supposedly never lost a case.

With him handling it, a nobody like Winifred didn't stand a chance.

There was nothing to worry about.

Iris spent the rest of the meal comforting Holden, assuring him that she'd help him look after his hardworking mother.
