Holden Lockwood!?
She had been desperately praying for Leland, her mind filled only with him.
It took a second to even conjure Holden's face...
But when she did, Iris's smug smile appeared right alongside it. The memories of his unhinged behavior, his sick displays of ownership, flooded back.
Right. Her ex-husband.
The man who wanted her dead. For him to send a lawyer now, what was his endgame?
Winifred stared at Jenson in chilling silence.
Holden was going all out. How much did he hate her?
Madeleine had already paved a flawless road to her destruction, yet Holden still couldn't let it go.
Her death wasn't enough to satisfy him.
Jenson leaned forward. "Mr. Lockwood asked me to check in. After taking so many beatings, he wants to know if you've grown any smarter."
Winifred braced her hands on the table and stood up.
She was trapped in a cage, her freedom gone.
The smartest move was to walk away and avoid giving them any ammunition to use against her.
"Hey! What's the rush? Sit down, let me finish," Jenson waved a hand, gesturing for her to stay.
With the guard standing right behind her, Winifred didn't have much choice.
She perched tensely on the edge of the stool.
Jenson continued delivering his message. "Mr. Lockwood wants to know if you've learned to play the game. For example, did you secretly record any audio? Take any videos? Did you bribe anyone to act as a witness or secure any evidence to protect yourself?"
He guessed she had a backup plan?
She froze!
Her heart plummeted, pounding frantically against her ribs.
She suddenly realized—even if she kept her mouth shut, her secret was compromised.
Holden was already suspicious.
Jenson shifted to business. "I've delivered the message just as you instructed."
"Excellent. Mr. Roth, your reputation precedes you."
"Rest assured. In my thirty years of practice, I've always walked the razor's edge. I don't make mistakes."
Holden's lips quirked. "The funds have been transferred to your account."
Jenson gave a slight bow. "Thank you for your trust, Mr. Lockwood. A pleasure doing business."
A dark, chilling smile spread across Holden's face.
"Thank you, Mr. Roth. Have a safe drive."
"You're too kind. Keep in touch."
Jenson returned to his car.
Holden watched the taillights fade into the distance, his fingers tightening violently around the steering wheel.
