It didn't matter if they got an update or not.
Madeleine added, "I had someone look into her movements when she returned to Seaport City. She spent the entire time trailing after Nelly."
Iris sneered. "Makes sense. She has no one else. Who else would she cling to?"
"What about Kingsbridge? Did she have anyone there?"
Iris immediately thought of Declan Sutton and giggled.
"Well, according to Declan, he has his eyes on her."
Madeleine scoffed, looking away in disdain.
Declan was a notorious playboy, drowning in booze and burning through women. Him showing interest wasn't a lifeline; it was a death sentence for her dignity. He just wanted a new toy to break.
He'd never lift a finger to actually save her.
Then Iris remembered someone else...
"Oh! She did visit Leland Lockwood's office once. She dressed up flawlessly—clearly trying to seduce him. But based on what Leland said, she completely rejected him and even threw shade at Holden. I wonder if Leland actually has a thing for her..."
If Leland cared about her, she'd have the ultimate backer.
And the Kingsbridge Lockwoods were untouchable.
But Madeleine just laughed. "Leland is the legitimate heir to the main family. Alistair Lockwood never married and has no children. Leland is the future head of the entire empire. Do you honestly think he'd marry a divorced woman who had a miscarriage?"
Sons of elite families bore heavy burdens. They married for power and stability.
A washed-up divorcée wouldn't even register on Leland's radar.
Even if he was temporarily blinded by her looks, the family matriarchs would tear her to shreds. Their standards for a daughter-in-law were thousands of times stricter than Madeleine's were for Holden.
Iris perked up at the gossip. "Wait, Winifred had a miscarriage?"
Madeleine stiffened, realizing she had slipped up.
"It was a long time ago. Let's not bring it up."
But knowing the baby had been Holden's felt like a knife twisting in Iris's gut.
Kian Jennings had already taken Holden for a fertility checkup.
She would give him a child soon enough.
She could move past this little grievance.
Madeleine then asked, "When her car went into the river back then, her driver died. Her body had to have suffered trauma. How did she make it all the way to Kingsbridge with no one helping her?"
Iris rolled her eyes. "Dr. Adams took her in. Pathetic, really. She clung to him for years, and he still kicked her to the curb."
Feeling tired, Madeleine decided to sleep.
Iris headed downstairs.
Holden was sitting in the living room, sipping chicken soup and watching the late-night news.
"Holden, did you see? Jenson Roth was murdered!"
"I saw," he replied evenly, though his eyes immediately filled with concern for her. "That lawyer was completely irresponsible. He took Mom's money, failed to do his job, and went and got himself killed. He must have scared you two, right? Let me finish this soup, and I'll go find him."
