His second uncle sighed heavily. “How did this family produce a man who lets his heart rule his head?”
The men exchanged exasperated looks. In their world, women were wives married for the benefit of the family—nothing more. They were certainly not the center of a man’s universe.
Holden was the anomaly. His uncles scoffed. From his initial obsession with Winifred, marrying beneath his station as the heir, to his current madness over Iris, he consistently proved himself a hopeless romantic. It was completely at odds with the ruthless nature of the Lockwood men.
Holden abruptly stood up and strode toward the door.
“Where are you going?” Roland demanded.
Holden didn't even look back. Iris grabbed her purse and scrambled to follow him. Behind her, the loud murmurs of his uncles carried through the hall.
“He’s probably off to check on his mother to ensure his precious celebrity fiancé's image doesn't suffer.”
“It’s a damn shame! Holden is brilliant, unmatched in business, but this lovestruck nonsense...”
“God knows who he inherited it from!”
“Certainly not his parents...”
Running to keep up, Iris heard the remarks and mentally filled in the blanks. Everyone must be looking at Roland right now. They saw a womanizing, domineering father and a petty, scheming mother. Holden had completely deviated from their genetics, growing into someone entirely his own.
Iris curled her lip. Those old fools in the Lockwood family were despicable. She jogged a few steps to catch up with him. “Where are we going?”
“The detention center!”
The first snow of the season arrived without warning. The snowflakes seemed reluctant, pushed out of the clouds like hesitant children, drifting miserably alongside the freezing rain. The biting wind whipped the rain sideways, sending the snowflakes spiraling out of control.
The car crawled through the miserable weather. As they neared the detention center, Iris spotted the heavy iron gates shut tight in the distance, the wind howling against the metal.
Directly across from those gates stood a girl. Her hands were stacked on top of her head in a futile attempt to shield herself, her long hair and dress violently whipped around by the storm. She looked so fragile she might blow away at any second.
*Screech—!*
Holden slammed on the brakes without warning. Momentum threw Iris forward. By the time she gathered her wits and pushed herself back into her seat, Holden had already thrown his door open.
She watched in shock as he charged into the sleet, violently twisting his arms to strip off his suit jacket. Gripping the collar with one hand, his long legs ate up the distance as he sprinted directly toward the girl.
