Iris nearly jumped out of her skin. That was... Winifred!
“Holden, what are you doing?!” she screamed, shoving her door open and shouting at his back.
Holden froze in his tracks. Iris plunged into the freezing rain, running against the wind.
Holden turned around. His eyes were shining with tears, his face twisted in profound heartbreak as he stared deeply at her. “Baby... how could you... come out in the sleet?”
It was a love that bordered on madness. His voice trembled and broke, choked with agony at the thought of her suffering the harsh weather.
Iris felt a pang of guilt. “I saw you running and got nervous. What are you doing out here?”
Before she even finished, Holden sprinted back to her. He wrapped his suit jacket tightly around her shoulders. With unshed tears glistening in his eyes, he whispered, “You little fool. I saw that woman out here, so I came out to test the wind and the temperature. I wanted to see how cold it was, to make sure you wouldn't suffer if you stepped out of the car.”
Oh. So that was it. She had thought he was running toward Winifred. She had completely misunderstood him.
“Get back in the car quickly,” Holden urged. “It’s freezing out here, and you’re so fragile.”
“It’s okay. I just want to be with you.” Iris pulled the edges of the jacket tight, wrapping it snugly around her neck. The fabric, still radiating Holden’s body heat, was incredibly warm. She could smell his cologne on the collar—a mature, sexy, and intoxicating scent.
The tears in Holden’s eyes deepened, reddening the bridge of his nose. “Seeing you suffer... I... I...” He pressed his fingers against his forehead, looking utterly tortured. “You have no idea. A man’s heart shatters, and the agony of not being able to pick up the pieces is unbearable.”
“Holden...” Iris started to cry too, entirely moved by his devotion.
Meanwhile, twenty minutes after being released, Winifred stood outside the iron gates waiting for a cab. Her dress was soaked through, her long hair plastered to her face. With her hands shielding her head, she looked around helplessly—only to witness the intensely dramatic, sickeningly romantic display playing out in the sleet between the beautiful couple.
Holden?
“What are you doing?” Iris panicked, trying to keep up.
Holden locked the car doors and stared at Iris through the window. “You are mine! Be a good girl. Stand safely on the sidewalk and wait for me.”
“Holden—”
Before she could finish, the engine roared, and the Maybach shot forward.
As Winifred watched Leland running toward her with an umbrella and a massive bouquet of flowers, a thought crossed her mind... *He might be so overwhelmed that he’ll pull me into a hug.*
But just as tears of relief streamed down her face and she waited for the man who had saved her...
