The car she was in was wedged right in the middle of a line of vehicles. If she screamed for help, no one would hear her.
“Is this...” Being locked up repeatedly had left her with severe PTSD. Panic prickled across her scalp, and she began to tremble uncontrollably.
*Bang, bang, bang!*
She dropped to her knees on the seat and pounded frantically on the window.
The door swung open, and Leland leaned in, offering a gentle smile. “You’re awake?” he asked softly.
But Winifred was crying.
He immediately pressed a warm hand to her forehead to check her temperature. “What’s wrong? Where does it hurt? Tell me.”
Still trembling, her voice shook with residual panic. “Where am I?”
“The parking garage at Seaport General Hospital.”
“Hospital?”
Leland’s expression shifted to deep concern. “You were shaking while you slept. I was worried about your health, so I brought you here to get checked out.”
Winifred didn't want to go to the hospital. The shaking was just a trauma response from being terrified out of her mind for days. Her nerves had been stretched to the breaking point, and she hadn't fully processed that she was safe yet.
But Leland had already clamped a firm hand around her wrist, pulling her along. She had no choice but to follow.
He had pulled a ticket for the afternoon queue. Winifred sat on a padded chair in the outpatient lobby, flanked by Leland’s assistant Chris and three massive bodyguards.
Leland himself went to handle the registration. The line at the automated kiosks was incredibly long. By the time he got a number, he was at the very end of the list; she wouldn't be seen until 5:00 PM.
The younger man was Miles Bauer, Holden’s assistant. He let out an “Oh!” of realization. “Mr. Lockwood, you must be here to visit Holden!”
After all, Holden Lockwood was the man of the hour, a nationally recognized figure right now. Having secured the “Reality Show Goddess,” men and women all over the country were obsessed with him, and elites were practically lining up to kiss his ring. For Leland to rush here at the first wind of news fit perfectly with the unwritten rules of corporate networking.
*Heh,* Miles thought smugly. Just a few days ago, Leland had skipped the engagement party, acting all high and mighty as the head of the Kingsbridge branch. But after the live stream of the engagement broke the internet, Holden and Iris had monopolized the trending charts. Their popularity was skyrocketing. Clearly, Leland couldn't sit still anymore. What a joke—swallowing his pride to come crawling back for a connection. How pathetic.
Beatrice, Iris’s mother, who had been sitting in the waiting area while Holden got a chest X-ray, strutted over.
“See, honey?” she boasted to her husband. “I told you, with Iris’s star power, there’s no way the main Lockwood family could ignore us.”
Lyndon smiled approvingly.
Beatrice looked unbearably smug. “The news of our family acquiring that legacy pharmaceutical company in Kingsbridge has already spread. Not only do we have a superstar daughter bringing glory to the family name, but we’ve also broken into the Kingsbridge elite circle. Now everyone is kissing our feet. Even the main Lockwood branch is getting anxious.”
