A Wedding Night Gone Terribly Wrong novel Chapter 219

“I’ve finally grasped the truth in the old saying: the tables always turn. Nobody stays on top forever. It doesn't pay to be too arrogant.” Otherwise, the very person you looked down on might climb right over your head and show you who’s boss.

Miles Bauer was fiercely loyal to his boss. He rolled his eyes at Leland’s retreating back, then turned around, his face plastered with a bright, sycophantic smile for Lyndon and Beatrice.

“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan. You’ve raised a phenomenal daughter and secured a brilliant son-in-law. Your family’s future is going to be dazzling.”

“Hahaha!” Lyndon patted him heartily on the shoulder. “Keep up the good work. Our family will make sure you’re well taken care of.”

“Thank you, sir,” Miles pledged his loyalty. “This time, because Mr. Lockwood was injured again thanks to Winifred, and Miss Morgan was so badly frightened, I promise you I will not let Winifred get away with this.”

Beatrice was highly satisfied. Smiling warmly, she invited, “Why don't you take a walk with us in the garden?” The second floor was packed with people waiting for diagnostics and felt unbearably stuffy.

Miles quickly checked the status of Holden’s tests. The chest X-ray results wouldn't be ready for another hour, and Holden was currently being wheeled in by an orderly for an abdominal ultrasound. Because Holden had coughed up blood twice in a single month, they were checking all his internal organs. With so many tests, it was going to be a while.

“Of course. I’ll escort you both,” Miles said, leading Iris’s parents down the stairs.

To get to the hospital’s small courtyard garden, they had to cross through Outpatient Zone D on the first floor and exit through a side door. Zone D was right next to a corner of the manual registration and billing windows, which had rows of seating for resting patients.

As Miles walked, his eyes scanning the crowd with a practiced corporate gaze, his eyes suddenly bugged out.

Wait! Was that Winifred?

*Perfect,* he thought, fuming. *She practically delivered herself right to my doorstep.*

“Please wait here a moment. I need to handle something,” Miles said, practically vibrating with rage. That woman was a menace.

Lyndon and Beatrice’s sharp eyes tracked his movement and instantly realized who he had spotted. Winifred. The root of all their misery. She was the public enemy number one. It wouldn't do for Miles to confront her alone; a shared enemy required a shared attack.

Miles had absolutely no idea about Winifred’s relationship with Leland. Previously, when Holden had taken Iris to the Lockwood Group headquarters to meet Leland, it had been a private social call, so he hadn't brought his assistant. Holden had been thoroughly humiliated by Leland during that visit, a crushing blow to his ego that he had kept utterly secret upon returning.

Today, Miles had only rushed over after Holden had been rushed to the hospital. By the time he arrived, Holden was lying on a stretcher in sheer agony, and Iris was crying her eyes out in distress. Neither had mentioned Leland or Winifred.

Therefore, in Miles’s mind, the “Mr. Lockwood” Winifred’s bodyguards were referring to could only be *his* boss, Holden Lockwood.

Knowing Winifred the way he did, he figured she was still pathologically obsessed with Holden. She’d rather die than leave him. Holden was her entire world, and she would never have another man.

Furious and completely disgusted, Miles sneered. “Winifred! You’ve suffered so much, everyone has turned their backs on you, and you still haven't woken up?!”

Winifred turned her head slightly, giving him a flat, utterly dismissive glance as if he were nothing but dirt on her shoe.
