Kian Jennings?
He was back.
And this time, he had brought the one woman Winifred would never, ever forget: Iris Morgan.
Kian had been aggressive and unhinged just this morning, and now he had rushed straight over with Iris. It was obvious he had gone running right back to her, eagerly reporting Winifred's whereabouts like a loyal lapdog.
Kian truly worshipped the ground Iris walked on. He was pathetic.
But the fact that Iris had become a famous actress? That was a shock.
In Winifred's memory, Iris had been in the same high school class as Holden. She had famously scored dead last in her graduating class, making her an absolute joke at the time. Meanwhile, Holden had graduated top of the city in the sciences, getting into Kingsbridge University. After he moved to the capital for college, the notorious slacker, Iris Morgan, completely fell off the radar.
It wasn't until Holden was in grad school that his mother, Madeleine, arranged a match for him with the youngest daughter of Seaport City's Morgan family. Iris re-entered Holden's life as his fiancée, pursuing him relentlessly.
Holden had once mentioned that when Iris confessed her feelings, she admitted she had harbored a massive crush on him since high school. It was also through Holden that Winifred learned Iris had attended a low-tier private college after failing her entrance exams, eventually landing a mediocre logistics job at her family's company, the Morgan Corp.
Iris was the same age as Holden—twenty-eight this year. For someone with her utter lack of talent to claw her way up to stardom was the equivalent of a pig learning to fly. It made zero sense.
Winifred glanced at Quentin. "You can go back to work."
Quentin frowned, looking concerned. "Are you sure you don't need me to stay?"
"I'm sure," Winifred nodded.
"Call me if you need anything."
"I will."
Their conversation drew the attention of the two people inside the office. The second Quentin walked away, Iris sprang up.
Winifred had let go of the past three years ago. She had zero interest in anything Iris was saying. She cut straight to the point: "Why are you here? What do you want?"
Iris pressed her lips together, suddenly adopting the look of someone deeply, tragically wounded.
"I came to remind you... Three years ago, Madeleine and I were preparing to press criminal charges against you for assault. Holden was torn between his hatred for you stabbing his mother and his sense of duty as your husband. He exhausted himself dealing with the fallout, eventually deciding to divorce you and force you out.
"What you did back then deeply traumatized me, and it broke Holden’s heart.
"Over the past three years, we have been there for each other. We healed the wounds you inflicted on us. We've grown together. Today, we are a happy, deeply in-love couple that everyone envies.
"Holden despises you. He will never take you back. So, do yourself a favor: know your place and stay the hell away from us."
Winifred didn't absorb a single word of the latter half of her speech.
