The first part of Iris's speech, however, definitely struck a nerve.
Winifred isolated that exact claim and snapped back, "I have never met two people as shameless as you and Madeleine!"
"You manipulated Holden with your pathetic little victim acts. You are both vicious and vile.
"You put yourselves on a pedestal, playing the perfect victims for the world to see. After all these years, you actually have the nerve to stand in front of me and talk about pressing charges? You two conspired to frame me! Your precious 'happiness' is built entirely on my ruined life. While you were busy seducing Holden, did you never worry that the blood of an innocent person would eventually come back to haunt you?"
Iris retorted sharply, "Winifred, defamation is a crime. Watch your mouth."
Winifred let out a bitter laugh. "Iris, are you going to take the truth of what you and Madeleine did to the grave?"
Iris puffed out her chest, looking incredibly self-righteous. "Bring out your evidence, then. If you're accusing Madeleine and me of framing you, show us the proof. If you can actually prove it, I swear on my platform as a public figure—I will publicly apologize to you."
Winifred stared at her.
Iris looked entirely too confident, utterly convinced that their setup from years ago was absolutely foolproof.
As Winifred was trying to figure out how to break through her facade, a shadow suddenly loomed over her.
Kian, wearing a sharp black suit, aggressively stepped into her personal space, yelling directly in her face.
"You are the most stubborn, cold-blooded woman I've ever met!"
"Refusing to admit your guilt, still spitting venom and lies! What you did was pure evil! Iris will never forgive you, Holden will never forgive you, and everyone who cares about justice will make you pay!"
The man's eyes were practically bulging out of his skull, his face contorted in a murderous rage.
"Kian, you are twisting the facts and spouting absolute garbage. Take Iris and get out of my clinic. We have nothing to say to each other, so stop bothering me."
In Winifred's eyes, Kian was entirely delusional, blinded by his obsession with Iris. She refused to waste her breath on an idiot. She stepped aside and gestured for them to leave.
Instead of leaving, Kian sneered.
"You commit all those atrocities, and we aren't even allowed to talk about it? If I were Holden, I wouldn't have let you off the hook with just a divorce."
Winifred had reached her limit. "And what would you have done? Killed me?"
Iris whipped her head around, glaring at Winifred. "Get over here and fix him!"
Winifred simply stared at them, her eyes ice-cold.
Kian was over six feet tall; Iris pulled and tugged, but couldn't get him off the floor.
Lifting her chin defiantly, Iris pulled out her phone, her manicured nail tapping on her contacts. She swiped down to "Husband" and hit dial.
"I gave you a chance to make amends, Winifred, but you threw it away. Just wait. I'm calling Holden. You hurt me again, and he won't let you get away with it."
He won't let you get away with it.
The words felt like daggers in Winifred's chest. She had already died once. She had given up everything. Was it still not enough?
Without a word, Winifred scooped the medical textbook off the floor and swung it in a vicious backhand, knocking the phone right out of Iris's hand.
"You need Holden to destroy me, but I have the power to destroy you myself!"
