A massive man practically vibrating with fat waddled past, holding his petite girlfriend's hand. His sheer momentum sent Winifred stumbling out of the crowd.
She stepped back awkwardly, one foot on the edge of the path, the other slipping onto the grass, nearly dropping into a split.
By the time she regained her balance and looked back, the shifting sea of people had completely swallowed Leland.
She couldn't see him anymore.
Since he was gone, she decided it was time to let it go. She turned and walked away.
Leaving the bustling plaza behind, she rented a small black horse and rode up Emerald Mountain alone.
Back at the food stalls, Yvette enthusiastically invited Leland. "I'm launching my new fashion brand on the twelfth of next month at the Kingsbridge World Trade Center. You should come show your support!"
"Earlier, you mentioned your mother," Leland replied smoothly. "You said Holden is picking her up from the detention center tomorrow. What does your family think about all that?"
Yvette lightly punched Leland's chest, giving him a playful wink. "Why so interested in my mom? Trying to figure out if she'd make a good mother-in-law?"
"Just making conversation," Leland deadpanned.
Yvette stepped closer. "I'll give you a chance to chase me. Want to go out?"
"No."
Yvette didn't take the hint. "I'm actually looking to settle down now. You should seriously consider it."
Leland took a step back. "I'm seeing someone."
Yvette laughed. "I haven't heard anything about that. You're just making excuses."
"Holden and Iris didn't tell you?"
"Those two? Please. They're newlyweds, practically glued to each other. They don't have time to gossip."
"I'm leaving," Leland said, turning on his heel.
In high spirits, Yvette draped an arm over Holden's shoulder. "Today has been so much fun. I ran into two guys wearing the exact same outfit as you. One of them was Leland. He's here hiking too. We chatted for a bit, and his ears turned completely red before he ran off."
Holden teased, "Got your eye on him?"
"Why not?" Yvette admitted openly. "His family is loaded, and their reputation is flawless. He's young, handsome, and completely innocent. I might actually give him a shot. If I married him, I wouldn't mind being tied down."
"Wow!" Holden laughed.
Iris couldn't hold back anymore. She had to shut this down. "Yvette, with Mom's scandal, our family's reputation has taken a hit. The Kingsbridge Lockwoods would never accept us."
Marriage at their level required equal social standing. The Kingsbridge Lockwoods had a pristine reputation; they had never produced a criminal. They would absolutely care about the Seaport City Lockwood branch being stained.
Yvette waved it off, completely unbothered. "Mom's mess is her own. She's just an ignorant housewife who watched too many soap operas. The Kingsbridge Lockwoods are a powerful family; they'll understand. Besides, Dad is divorcing her. She's being cut off, so it has nothing to do with us anymore."
"But you're six years older than him!" Iris practically yelled, desperate to stop her.
